I got my Carburater Adjusted!!! HUZZAH!!!
I ordered a $236 carburetor for my 1953 CUb Tractor and upon installing it yesterday, gasoline poured out of the carb. It was the end of the day, late evening, and I was irritated and fired off an email to the company about the carb not working out of the box. I opened it up and made some adjustments to it and it still didn't run correctly. Then I see on the companies web page if you open up the carb well, its yours GRRRRRRRR SO this morning , after a good nights sleep, a few cups of Community Coffee, and a visit to their tech manual website to download a set up sheet I went at it again. I set the float level to the recommended dimension, disassembled and cleaned ALL jets and valves, and upon re-attaching the carb I was able to mow several acres of yard with swimmingly success. So whats the bottom line? I paid 236 bucks for a part that SHOULD have been set up correctly, and then you tell me if I take it apart to set it up its mine, well OK. Send it back to the sellor, have them either look at it and send me another THAT ISNT SET UP.. I like to tinker and repair, I have this old tractor, a 1965 Chevy pick-up truck , a 1930 something model A Hammond Organ, and a 1973 Fender Rhodes that need tinkering and TLC, but a brand new part? Thank you for the rant, now back to your regular CH banter.

I restored a 1949 Willy stake bed (original) years ago and when it was ready to fire it up it too flooded. It had a leather type plunger that was folded. Then it wouldn't start after I fixed it. When it flooded it killed the plugs. At that time I didn't know gas would do that to plugs... t'was easy to hear the problem though. That issue has probably caused a lot of folks to wear themselves out pulling on a lawnmower engine lol.

I posted here earlier today and it vanished....anyway, I was saying...you mentioned a Hammond and a Fender Rhodes in the same breath as your pickup and tractor. Do you use all four of them outside somehow? I'll tell you, that's good ol' American ingenuity at its best!

There was a retired air force jet mechanic that worked in a shop a block from my house. The cool thing about him was his common sense. That combined with experience from many years and just being a very intelligent person sure made him a very interesting friend. I did pay attention. I don't mind 2 cycle trimmers but that's about my limit.

I hear ya MM. Fuel, fire, and air. Barring major mechanical breakdowns, you could get them running pretty quick with minimal diagnostics. Bent tab on the float causing flooding? Yeah, you gotta pop the lid, but it's an easy fix. Carb for a '53 Cub? You gotta figure that's been on the shelf for a while, and maybe dropped once or twice. And Binders are oddballs on a good day. I'm sure the price reflected that. I have fond memories of my days at the parts store. The IHC section of the catalog had 4 lines of parts and 40 lines of footnotes.

ActuallyBob, may I call you Bob?, OK then Robert, the carb is Not NOS it is a re-tooling of the original Farmall Updraft carb, and I don't know where they had it manufactured, it is NOT IH/Case?Farmall or whoever they are at them moment , a retailer up in Wisconsin is selling them HERE is a link to the page . You are correct, a tab adjustement to correct the float height, PLUS a cleaning of the parts, valves, and jets cured the problem. I found a tractor forum with plenty help and advice,, some just like we get here.......

Bob is fine I think it's cool that somebody invested in the tooling for such a vintage (and limited) application. I would be very surprised if anything currently available was OEM. I like old machinery. I have a '54 Shopsmith MkV, mostly original, but the motor was replaced some time in the 60's. And I installed an updated spindle a few years ago. She's still a joy to work with.
