I got my DAW back! Yeah!
I spent a couple of hours remixing one of my favorite classic rock tunes... HOLD YOUR LIGHTERS UP!! It's at the top :-) www.soundcloud.com/rockinrobby 49 bye byes... There's actually a lot going on here... I'm playing and singing everything. Lots of vocals? Lots going on with the drums, the keys? You should listen :-) LOTS of work went in to it... Playing the e-bow! Gotta love an e-bow ;-) Playing the bass, playing all of the guitars, and the Hammond, and the drums (I played every hit) I'm just glad to have my DAW back!! It's been almost 2 months... I know there are haters? I know, and I'm not saying without good reason... But you gotta love this shiz?

**** What I meant to say was, "I believe I have figured out how to get a half way decent mix?" As Martha Stewart would say? "It's a good thing..." However, I am always open to and willing to accept mix crits.

I didn't realize you had lost your DAW but I'm glad it's back. This is a real nice song with a great vibe. The mix sounds a little thick in the middle EQ with the drums getting buried. Maybe you could EQ the drum tracks to cut through the mix with more high end EQ.???

Scotty, you were right (as usual...) I made many tweaks, mostly made w/the intent to define the drums better in the mix? (thank you) Many other mods as well, I think it's Moe Betta :-) I "played" those drums, so I want them to be heard....

" it's a little loose in places" Kenny? Keep in mind, this is what attracted you to some of the best women you've ever known? But it's a "live" performance (by me) And when I say "live" I admit I comp'ed the guitars, the vocals, the bass... I comp'ed that stuff as we all do. And the drums? They take the longest... I play them? (With the fingers) The guitars, bass, vocals, and keys all come pretty naturally? I sweat the drums... It's pretty tight where it counts bro? (again, with the women... I know? But you can't deny it either?) It's basically a live performance, so you'll here some floating? But tight where it counts...

Robbie, it seems that when I stopped playing Rock and started playing Jazz my love life got real simple all of a sudden …. you ever heard of the ghost of Christmas past , the ghost of Christmas present , and the ghost of Christmas future ?... that's what happened to my love life if I substitute the word Christmas for girlfriend nowadays , it's all just a bunch of memories or possible future longings and hopes anyway , that's cool that you played all the parts on your song …did you use a real Hammond ? Kenny, you are one of the most respected musicians on the forum sir... Not just by me? But by everyone. We all play guitar, but few play it as do you sir... It's a Hammond? But it's sampled, NI's B4, but I did play it? :-) I play the damn keys, I play the bass and guitars, and sing? It's my passion...

Bass is too strong in the mix. I'm not sure the tone is right for this song. It's kind of harsh/distorted. It seems like you have lots of instruments fighting for the same space. JMO, but I'm a novice.

Yeah, I made some edits per Ed, pulled the bass back a bit. I can't really make it not growl? It's my fretless Ed :-) It growles :-D By design? I love that bass... I used to hate it? Friggen Fretless? But now that I can play it? It's my favorite bass "by far." If you haven't gone fretless yet? What are you waiting for? It's the way to go IMO. I pulled the bass back (thank you Ed) There are "many" other changes... I think it's one of my best mixes? Yeah there's a lot going on in the middle (spectrum) I can't help that? It's the guitars, the organ, and the vocals... They're all up in there? I spent a few more hours trying to split them out w/panning, EQ, compression and envelopes? Again, I know it's busy in there? There are "several dozen tracks involved here..." So it gets tricky? Especially w/someone like me? But I think it rocks pretty damn hard! (epic...) And I maintained dynamics? (something I tried to do) Especially, thank you to those who gave qualitative input... I can't tell you how much I appreciate you! "You're welcome!" ;-) I love this tune, I hope you can enjoy it 1/2 as much as do I.

I think it's true to the original though? And that's what I set out to do "always..." I would like to think if the band listened? They would smile and nod :-) That's my goal when I start out... So if I can end up there? Then I've accomplished what I set out to accomplish. Good time on all the parts, keys, bass, guitar and drums. And vocals. "time will tell us, who is trying to sell us" Good times indeed. ------------------ As long as it doesn't suck? I'm happy :-)

I've never heard the original (CSN never entered my radar really), but I checked it out and you're very, very close with this Robby, excellent version. In fact, some of it sounds better than the original, the guitar tones for example. Can't really find anything to pick on in the mix, I can follow everything nicely, but I'm not really sure that's important anyway, you have the feel nailed down.

Yea -- you got your DAW back!! I'm not familiar with much of CSN's stuff (do they do the Blues -- a feeble attempt at humour), so I am not encumbered by comparing this to the original. Having said that -- this sounds doggone good to me. I like the wide mix that you have used on this. I also think that your vocals were excellent. You did all of the instrumentation --- so, indeed you are the Band! Nice one Robbie!

Getting geared back up for a few project, I own some people some vocals, but was sick, and now I'm just stalling... ROBBBBBAAAAAAAAY!!!! Absolutely PHENOMENAL, bro, I think this is definitely your best mix to date! I listened two nights ago, but got called away before I had time to log in, and at that point, the bass was overpowering and the low mids seemed a little congested, but now it's a little more than 48 hours later and it's like night and day, you really knocked this one out! Nice playing and super vocals and harmonies with very tasteful panning and good clarity. Man, I really love the keys on this one, too. This was always an old favorite of mine probably because it was on the first actual "adult" album that I ever owned. I was eleven, and my sister was nine years older than me and gave it to me as a Christmas present and sitting on the living room floor with a little green "suitcase" record player, I was instantly hooked on the flowing harmonies of CSN. Dynamite job, buddy, thanks for bringing back some warm memories! Oh, yeah, PS: I'm glad you got your DAW back and that you're back in business again. Have a good one!Bob

Sounds really good here. I didn't really notice much of the 'loose-ness' other than the 'liveness'. Mix sounds really fine. Your vocals coupled with your guitar and bass playing melds quite nicely (as always). Keys are well played and only offer occasional standouts which can be expected from sampled organs which sometimes add character and sometimes not (My only subtle comment from the listen, the sound quality of the Hammond is quite good, though). ..... Yeah, I just wish I could do something as good as this .......

I remixed it again, many thanks to those who commented (final mix I think) Lots of little changes... Too many to detail. But suffice it to say? I think I'm learning from the masters here on how to mix and put things in their place. It's a long slow process? And I'm not the best at it, but I'm not the worst either? And I'm getting better... :-) -Bob, the fact that this was one of your favorites too? :-D It is on my top 10 list buddy... I really wanted to cover it in a way that if they (CSN) Listened? They would nod approvingly... I think I have a mix that they would bop along to :-) Thank you SO MUCH for your kind words. I'm trying to get better, and your comments really made me smile. Tippity Tap! So nice to hear from you :-D Thanks for the kind words! I try not to make it "too tight?" I want it to have an organic feel? So there is "a live feel?" that I go for? And you were hearing it :-) I'm glad you were digging it man, I played everything? All of the guitars, drums, bass, keys, and vox. Daryl, 10 years my junior? I'm glad you respect your elders sir!! ;-) (1958 here) ============= No vocal editing btw? I sang all of the parts straight up. My goal? Is that when you listen, you hang your head and bob along... And at some point say, "just damn! How did he do this?" :-)

Thanks John, rock on.. One of the greatest bands of all time! CSNY (AND ME!) It's a tribute version to the original... Or at least as close as I can get it? But I'm doing everything, all of the guitars, bass, drums, keys, vocals, etc... I do lots of originals too, but I love the music from the 60s/70s... It speaks to me. Lots of little changes in this version. Panning, EQ, envelopes? Lots of little things... I'm working on trying to get "the mix..." in general terms? It's tricky.. It's the hardest part for me personally? I understand all of the components? I understand them well... But putting it all together? Well that's the trick, isn't it? :-) THAT is what I'm working on. I have a pretty good mix here? It's not bad? Maybe even pretty good? But THAT is the friggen trick! To get a pretty good mix? Present everything evenly... Tell a story... Some over here? Some over there... Some up the middle? And in a song like this, "it all moves around..." And then all of the EQ, and carve outs, etc... It's a science? And an art...
