I'll miss it... I'm one of the "just because" is a good enough reason to explore space type tax payers.

I spoke with someone recently who asked me sincerely "what did the space program do for me?".

I didn't even try to explain.

    :-(

I really don't see it as a tragedy as much as it is a step toward doing the same things in a better  and less expensive way. While the general public is  gawking at area 51 and similar sites on Google earth. The real stuff is happening somewhere else and it blows the 40 year old technology out of the water.

It was an amazing program that we gleaned a lot of info from. It always amazed me that the computer brain in the shuttle had less umph than a 386 pc but it was redundant with three seperate pcs, still an antique by todays standards .We have more computer power in our cell phones now.

.......................and I think that NASA was requesting the use of the Bapu computer for some of their work.

    It is sad, no doubt.

But if the expense cannot be justified, I guess that's the way of the world these days.

I think anyone of my generation or older who watched those ghostly black and white images being beamed back from the surface of the moon in 1969 will always have an almost ingrained interest in space exploration.

It always amazes me when I recall the projections of the astro-scientists back then that by now we should have people living permanently on the moon and walking on the surface of Mars just how far we fell short of those predictions. I'm also certain that the technology does exist to accomplish both these feats, and that the only obstacle to their fulfillment is money.

Lord knows I've paid enough in transaction fees to fund the space programs of several countries. If I had a nickel for every transaction fee I've paid, I'd be rich.

NASA and the government knew how old the Shuttle program was.  I just wonder why they didn't have a follow-up program on the boards BEFORE they abandoned the Shuttles.  They should have had a smaller "taxi" type of craft to get the crew on and off the space station in an emergency.  They don't need the  Shuttle's "semi" type of craft for every mission.  I can see that they would normally want to bring supplies and that's why they stuck with the Shuttle as long as they did.

A sad fate awaits these workhorses of the US space program, in my opinion. They'll be put out to pasture in museums while there is still useful work for them to perform.
The shuttles are perfect lunar exploration vehicles. They should weld in some fuel tanks, load them up with food and construction equipment and tools and send them to the moon. Possibly unmanned, but if they asked for volunteers I think the list will include all of the astronauts we have, plus many from other nations.

I gotta say I'm a little ticked off at the NASA program. I was gang probed by aliens (and not the Earthly kind) repeatedly as a child and I'm mad at NASA for bringing attention to our planet and drawing them here.

Have you seen the TV show Ancient Aliens? Come on people! Wake! Up!

    Sheesh.

we originally went into space for military and geo-political reasons.

has human kind benefited from this?

yes, but the absolute hands down winner in space exploration has been the military and I'm not sure if that has made a better or safer world.

If we put the space program on the back burner, at least until this economy is in better shape, I don't see the harm

Not a bad idea.  Except for the guys that are current residents of the ISS.  Chances are that everything will work out OK, but what happens it the Russian space ship has a problem.  There is no backup.

If we were really going save some money, I'd be all for it.  I think the government will just spend it on pork barrel stuff that doesn't help anyone but a few congressmen--kind like that bank/mortgage company bailout.  They could have given the money to the given vouchers to the home owners and let the home owners make a few payments which go to the banks anyway.  Instead they gave the money directly to the banks and no one else got any benefit at all.
