I have just heard Return to Forever and OMG!

I am a very lucky man! Yes that amazing band Return to Forever with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White and Jean Luc Ponty with guitarist Frank Gambale is reforming to do a 2011 world tour.

I know Frank from a former life in Canberra the capital of Australia. We played in a band together of course. (He was pretty terrifying then!) But his rise to fame is a bit like a fairytale leaping from Canberra to LA and into Jean Luc Ponty's band and then into the Chick Corea Electric band for over 7 years. Frank is very kindly getting me some tickets to the show tonight. I might get to meet them all too!

Yes the tour starts off in Australia and they are here in Melbourne right now. I am really looking forward to hearing the music. Frank tells me they have been practicing hard (six weeks) and it is burning!

Think of how good the CD is going to sound now compared to the 70's releases. They have freshened up the music and written new material. It is going to be one gig to hear this decade probably! I know the live mix will be perfect too. Chick usually brings out a serious engineer to take of business in that area.

Carvin guitars has made a special guitar for Frank as well as an amp manufacturer has made an amp for him too.

Chick Corea's webiste has got details of the tour dates etc..

IMO, Frank Gambale is one of the best!

Thank you Mike for your thoughts and yes bapu  I would love to report in.

Well it was quite amazing really. I am still thinking about it today. 3 hours of amazing music. Chick was outstanding as usual playing great heads and solos. He used a hardware setup with some sort of Yamaha instrument that was predominately a Rhodes patch. Real concert grand as well with Yamaha MOTIF and Moog Voyager. Amazing synth solos. I love Chick cutting loose on synthesisers (well piano is fine too!)

Frank was excellent as usual in this situiation. I loved the sound of his Carvin guitar. He told me its the best guitar he has very played. He was using a Marshall setup but a well known amp maker is about to release a line of amps in Franks honour. Not heaps of guitar solos but when they came around they were well received. More heads and lines than solos maybe.

Stanley was incredible, I could not believe it. The Alembic sound was ridiculous. They have just made him a new one for the tour. His playing was incredible. Funny on stage too. Fat is an understatement. Subs got a workout with Stanley. Chick brought his engineer out, he did a beautiful but loud rock mix. But it was all in perfect balance. (except for the subs on a few ocassions)

Jean Luc Ponty stole my heart. My god he can take care of business in this setting. His solos nearly reduced me to tears. Amongst all the angst at times in the mix Jean Luc would take you away with a solo. He soars like an angel. They are all betwen 60 and 70 except for Frank and Stanley yet the music was so well played. Please go and see them if you can.

Lenny was just fantastic. He is so releaxed and just kicked the ass out of the grooves and the tunes. He was playing a small Ludwig kit but the sound out front was nothing like it. Massive. His right arm I think is not well these days and has perfected the art of playing left handed in the arms and right handed in the feet. It is quite beautiful to watch actually and makes sense to me too. Why cross your hands to play a rock beat. His left hand is ridiculous.

The music is all a journey and you could almost class as classical now but modern at the same time. It is timeless and you can return to the music forever with these tunes. They did play a very new Jean Luc tune which was also incredible. Beautiful writing and execution of his own tunes and solos. You definately don't get to hear music this well written and played very often.

They all jumped onto acoustic instruments at times. Grand piano, double bass, acoustic guitar and a more normal acoustic violin. OMG the acoutsic stuff was amazing too. Quieter, and the music was just incredible. But then when they all jumped back into electric mode it exploded! It did get loud at times too but they used the full dynamic range really well.

I got to brielfy meet Stanley and Jean Luc but I chatted to Lenny. He is very quiet. Frank and I hung out in a Melbourne bar afterward and we chatted about it and what he is up to now. By the way I mentioned 6 weeks rehearsal in my first post but in fact try 4 days to rehearse it all!  Most of them weren't reading either, they were playing it from memory.

4 days... that's incredible... and I think musicianship at that level is almost impossible for mere mortals to imagine... so we may not even understand exactly what you mean when you say that.

    :-)

That sounds like a great night.

I'm glad you shared the excitement with us.

    best regards,
    mike

Yes Herb the best way to find out where these guys are at is to visit Chick Corea's website and look under On Tour/Concert schedule.

But here is the link anyway:

    http://www.chickcorea.com.../concert-schedule.html

The whole tour is only until end of May so watch out because it will be over quick. I just want bapu to go and hear Stanley's Alembic. (or both of them. He is using two. A small bodied model that they made for him years ago. Same as the Alembic they made for Nunz Gambale, Franks brother who is also a monster player) The second one is a new one. Frank tells me the frets positions are inlaid with flying geese and they are all pointing upward! They (fret positions) are still lit too and you could easily see the lights from the audience.

But they sounded quite different from each other too. I know that virtually every Alembic is special and hand made. bapu is a lucky man to have one.

Stanley Clarke has just won a Grammy as well. He mentioned he was nominated at the gig too.

I remember seeing Jean Luc. Geez, that was like 40 friggin years ago I think. I think he was with Chick. Either way, I've seen both Jean and chic (with dimeola and clarke) up close in little clubs and those were shows that have stuck in my soul for that long. Incredible, magic, beyond words performances. Only other one that beats it was seeing Robben Ford up close. If they come to your town, go see them. That kind of talent is mindboggling.
    Thanks for the journey Jeff.
