I have to tell someone....

....I was robbed today. They/he/she broke into my home through the back door while I was at the nursery buying some plants for my yard.

Among several other things they stole my first guitar. It's a 1973 Guild D-25 acoustic. I've had the guitar for nearly 40 years and it saddens me that it's gone.

Generally with home invasions, it's a neighbor kid within 5 blocks of your home.

    Very Sorry to hear.

I know the feeling all too well.
My brother and I were given a Baby Martin each when we were first learning guitar as children. (about 45 years ago.)
We were moving to a new house and my Dad made the mistake of leaving the instruments to move the following day.
When we went to get them the next day someone had broke into the house we were moving from and stole those guitars and several other instruments and his album collection. I have never forgotten the feelings that were felt when we found the instruments gone.

We had that happen once here...some turkey tried to break in to our house when we were asleep...our cats alerted me to this intruder and I scared him away by coming down the stairs with my machete...he took one look and ran...

I can't think of anything that would piss me off more.  The comment about a kid within a few blocks is probably dead on, the alternative is actually far more depressing and that's a "friend" who happens to know exactly what you have (I've seen the second one happen twice to people I know).

Definitely report it to the police, but also call up the local pawn stores to give them descriptions of what was taken.  As Tim said above you should also check eBay and Craigslist, but if you DO find your stuff on there, don't confront the guy directly - notify the police and let them handle it.

Oh yeah, and if you end up reporting it to your insurance company, resist the urge to report that new PRS and DAW that they "took" as well.

Thanks so much for everyone's kind words and advice.

I stayed up half the night last night thinking of what I would like to do to the little XX***s if I could ever catch them. Also made it difficult to sleep because my back door is completely busted apart and I'm unable to lock it so I stacked a bunch of pots and pans in front of the door, which would cause quite a racket if the door was opened so I would know someone was trying to enter the house.

The disturbing thing is that it appears they were interrupted during the robbery. They fully intented to steal my mixer because it had all my patch cables wrapped around it and they yanked the cable to my break-out box for my soundcard out from my computer breaking off the threaded screws that hold it to the soundcard. They went through all that trouble yet they left it behind, which tells me they may have still been here when I drove up my driveway.

It also disturbs me that they now know what I have inside my home and they might plan to return someday to finish the job.

I will definately be checking around the pawn shops. Fortunately I have the serial number for my Guild guitar written down as well as the serial number for my camcorder. (No serial numbers for any of the other stuff though)

I feel so angry and violated and I want to get even! I mean...how can anyone justify doing something like that.

I was one of three homes within a few blocks that was robbed yesterday so I doubt if it was anyone I know.

Thanks to everyone here for letting me blow off some steam.

    Pete

Good luck getting your stuff back mate.

Could consider setting up a basic security camera system to record where your gear is, if you are worried. A basic camera plus recording device isn't too expensive (here anyway).

Sorry to hear the bad news. I hope the authorities will find them, i'm assuming you've already reported. Do they have any leads or do they have a hunch on who the person/what group this was?

I remember when my dad's house was broken in to. My father heard some racket and quickly got up. He saw the thief and got eye contact. The thief ran, while my father got his knive and threw it. The man then escaped by climbing the gate with a bleeding back and a knife stabbed in it.

    That's bad. I hate thieves.
A couple weeks ago a rep from a major security company whose name begins with A and ends with T came by offering a free $1,200 security system if we would put their sign in our yard for a few weeks.
Marking the lot so the thieves will know which ones to break into, I thought. He had an ID badge but looked like a homeless guy.
I declined and he came back with "there have been a lot of break-ins in the area, you know".
I said we're not interested in stopping thieves, we have guns and we hope they break in so we can kill them.
But I am a little worried about burglars; always have been out here in the semi-boonies.

    Sorry to hear that Peter.

What really annoys me about this sort of thing is that the lowlife who stole your prized possession is probably just out to make a few quick bucks without realising (and definitely not caring) that the guitar is worth more to you in sentimental value than any monetary amount.

If you have a photo, or at least a good description, I'd pass this information as quick as possible to any local pawn shops or second hand music dealers.

I hope you get your guitar back and that the scum who took it gets his comeuppance.

Just like backing up your hard drives, this is a good time to remind people to simply take a camcorder and methodically take video of your studio and possessions.  Make sure you shoot the backs where the serial numbers are as well.

Even if you don't have a dog, putting a large water bowl and huge bone by the back doors helps put a little bit of doubt into the guys breaking in.  I used to have "Smile, you're on video!" stickers for the same effect.  You have to figure that the theives are a bit nervous to begin with so I just want to push them over the edge.

Of course, if I can afford it, I'd love to have a "real" hidden surveilance system.

    Pete.... that sucks.

I know the feelings all too well.

My SG has been stolen TWICE.... yeah, not once, but twice. I got it back both times. First time it was gone for 6 months. I had given up on it. But the law had the serial number.....It was taken from a club at load out.... the manager saw the guy some eyewitnesses said took it a week later back at the club......MP's showed up and caught the guy who did it..... he told the Naval Investigative Service all they needed to know... they worked with the police in another state and I eventually got a call and it was returned to me.

Second time, I came home from work to find the window in the door busted and the door ajar. Again through a series of events and a sharp eyed neighbor, I got it back next day.

I am in the security business now and my house has a really nice burg system that works well.
