I hear everything twice!!!

I have a track that triggers a clave in a drum kit on my only piece of outboard gear...my Alesis QS8 controller...as a click track in my normal template.  The last few days when I power up X1 and it loads said template and I press play it "doubles" every note in the click track.  I have a 16th note on each beat but now I'm getting two 16th notes on every beat.  I look in PRV and only one note per beat.  Maybe X1 wants to Salsa!!

Dude, you got two ears, you hear two hits. Nailed it.

A while back I had a similar prob with my XP-50, suggestions ranged from routing everything through MIDI-OX to...well I guess that was it. A MIDI feedback bug of some kind.

I put the synth away for a while and then next time I set the whole system up it worked fine.

I think installing my new VRM box might have had something to do with it.  But I'll check the local on/off on my controller also.  Tis weird.

No Beags, it's just like a short delay.  The notes are "about" a 16th apart.  Instead of dit...dit...dit...dit... it's didit...didit...didit...didit...

Funny you should mention that song there Bub, ol pal.  Back in the early eighties I played nightly in a group in Nashville that was comprised of mostly guys that had formerly been in a band called Myron and the Marvells...a fifties show group.  We did that song every night in one of our shows.  Our guitar player, Billy Abdo, sang it.  Thanks for bringing back a great memory.  Of course now I'll never get the dang thing back out of my head!!

input echo or local on for your controller would be my best guess as well.

does it do it if you start another new project?

Pal If your not playing the click track live then I dont see where the local on would affect it.
I was having an issue with doubled notes on record using am m-audio prokeys 88 controller that wound up being an issue where TWO keyboard zones were active at the same time, with the same range and midi channels

    Hi Ol' Pal...

Is it possible that you've got both hardware and software based monitoring enabled?
If there are any latent plugins (or you're using a larger ASIO buffer size), that would delay the software based monitoring (causing the "ba-bum, ba-bum, ba-bum" effect).

    Best Regards,

    Re:I hear everything twice!!! 2011/03/19 00:24:39 (permalink)
This definitely has something to do with installing the Focusrite VRM.  Once I've done that the FTU starts showing the message "because the audio is streaming the sample rate cannot be changed" and now matter what I try or how I monitor my outboard Alesis QS8 (click and working piano) have a horrible latency in playback which shows up as a "delay".  If I uninstall both the VRM and FTU and reinstall only the FTU everything goes back to normal.  More later...probably.

    FYI

I had a real creepy delay the other night during a session. Could'nt figure it out for the life of me.  Turned out to be "i tunes" was running in the background.

    Re:I hear everything twice!!! 2011/03/19 10:37:19 (permalink)
Well, I don't know how it's doing it...or what, exactly, is happening but it is definitely some kind of interaction between the VRM, the FTU and Win7.  Once it starts the only way to get rid of the delay is to uninstall both the VRM AND the FTU, clear the registry of all refs to either and reinstall ONLY the FTU.  Then everything's fine.  If the VRM is reinstalled the problem crops up again.  The delay is only on my single piece of outboard gear (Alesis QS8) which I use for my click track and my working piano in my Normal template.  And it occurs no matter how I have my FTU monitoring or Win7 sounds dialog set.  No biggie, I'll just return the VRM.  The problem is I like the VRM technology quite a bit.  It is a great mixing reference tool.  That's why I've been looking at the Focusrite Pro 24 DSP...which includes VRM tech.

    Hey Ol Pal,
Just curious on how you are running/hooking up the FTU and the VRM. Thats an additional sound card is it not.  My first thought is that with the Computers sound card disabled and Sound defaulted to FTU or VRM. Are both of these active or which one is the Default Sound Device?

I assume your not using ASIO with both the FTU and the VRM connected?

It just plain doesn't work with the FTU.  Even tho it's only being fed by the SPDIF of the FTU it loads a midi driver and there's latency and it screwed the pooch on my whole X1 system.  That said, I really like the VRM mixing environment and found it quite beneficial.

Did you finally nail that VRM Box thing? Are you still using it?
Think I'll give it a whirl - only, I have to import one so I thought I'd consult the oracle first :-)

I ended up just replacing my Fast Track Ultra with a Focusrite Pro 24 DSP which has the VRM built into it.  Works like a charm now.  But I never did get the VRM standalone box to work correctly with the Fast Track Ultra.

Yeah. I tried 3 of them (FTU's) before I could get one to work at all: the other two made delightful motor boat noises. I have several Echo cards here a couple of FTP's so I may be able to figure it out once I get the Box. I guess I'm also asking how you are finding the Box? Useful? I travel a good deal and it would be great to have a way of completing or nearly completing projects on the road.
    Thanks

I actually love the VRM as a listening and mixing tool.  It is very informative and sometimes surprising at how "different" your mixes will sound in different environments.
