I hope this post helps someone

In a recent post I was looking for help regarding a problem I was having where for no apparent reason my CPU warning light would come on and all audio would drop out. I had it narrowed down to the connection between my Tascam FW1884 and Sonar. I was asking about Firewire cards and Chipsets. You all were very helpful in your suggestions and I thank you.

I also went to the Tascam Forum to see if anyone else had experienced this as I felt it was probably more of an issue with the 1884 than Sonar. At any rate, to make a long story even longer and more self-involved. I found an old post in that forum where almost as an after thought to their recommendations they said "Disable wireless internet connection". This was probably just common sense and something I should have figured out long ago, but since doing it the problem has completely gone away. No new Firewire card or Chipset needed. How cool is that??

I hope this post helps someone along the way.

Rick

P.S. - This forum is such an amazing source of information. I have learned more about recording with Sonar in the past month than I did in the whole year before. My many thanks to all of you!!

I too us an FW-1884 and love it. But I have noticed that all of my pojects have extremely high CPU usage, and I am running a P4, 2.8GHz with 4 Gig of ram. I wonder if this is just something to do with the 1884. I am not using a laptop, so there is no wireless internet card. Just adding my .02

    David,

I'm not using a laptop either. I'm running an Athlon 2800+. I just have one of those D-Link routers that gives me internet connection from the main cable connected to my other computer. I do however know what you mean by the high CPU and the 1884. But it wasn't even that my CPU was running high. It would just suddenly spike for no apparent reason.

    Hey David,

I run the 1884 and love it also- strange about the high CPU usage though? - Can you give a few details about your settings and project sample rates? We have similar systems although you have a lot more ram but I am not seeing this

I did warn in a post some time back, I think, that wireless networking will cause audio dropouts. In addition, when the channel your router is on collides with another network - e.g, people next door put in wireless, CPU can go up to 100% as the drivers hunt around. You need to disable the transmitter while using any audio software. Wired networking doesn't seem to have the same problems.

This sounds a little familiar. I've been getting spikes and dropout during recording and the Pub next door is a wi-fi 'hotspot'.

Sorry to be thick but how do I disable it on my PC?

On my PC there is a wireless connection icon in the tray (lower right of your monitor). Just right click on that and then click on "Disable". To reconnect, go to the start menu where it says "connect to".

    Hope that helps!
