I just had a bad dream.....

I was dozing off a minute ago when something came to me:-
GOOD -  what if we have not heard much from Cakewalk lately because they are working on something NEW......
BAD - what if that something new is an iCrap product................

Hope that was JUST a bad dream.........

Nigel,

Surely you MUST understand that iCrap IS the wave of the future...

Everything must become either iCrap or Android...there IS no other way...

Computers are SOOO last week....

I was just listening to a podcast yesterday featuring our own IK Obi, where the topic was recording via iOS apps. I listened for half an hour as the participants gushed about the new world that iOS was enabling, one in which music can be created anywhere, any time, by anybody.

Most of the discussion, however, was how to get around the limitations of iOS and iPhones and how to get iPhone-generated audio and MIDI into your computer so you could actually do something with it. Apparently the best solution today is to email your iPhone tracks to yourself.

What they never explained was why the heck they so badly want this to work, that they're willing to jump through so many hoops to achieve it? Well, Obi's rationale is obvious, his employer wants to sell stuff. But the moderators were real studio guys who I presume would understand the severe limitations of a studio-less studio.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Bit,

I guess that's the thing...so you've recorded it on your phone....BIG DEAL...
Laptops are FAR more efficient at this....oh..but they're slightly bigger...I guess
that's the problem...how about using a portable digital recorder...oh..but that would
mean that you'd have to carry that AND your phone...
And then, once you've recorded on iCrap you send to yourself via an email, then import
it into your DAW and NOW you can do something with it....

Seems quite a bit on the stupid side to me...but that's just me....
I guess because they are marketing to teens and twenties...they're not
bright enough to figure out that there are FAR better ways to do this...

But, what do I know....I've only been doing this for 40 years...I've got a LOT
to learn....

Far be it for me to be to try and be serious for a moment, but the old marketing man in me keeps wanting to shout out:-
1) How many people in the WORLD have and use DAW's?
2) How many people in the WORLD have and use phones?

For example, where I live for a good part of the year, they reckon everyone on this very small Island (166 sq miles - about 1/6th of the size of the Ponderosa Ranch!!) has TWO phones. Why??

So instead of making expensive software for people who may or may not like it, recommend it and  buy it, make cheap junk, convince every tom dick and harry they too can make music, sell it DIRT cheap so they don't feel too aggrieved when it doesn't work properly, but sell LOTS OF IT.

Just my somewhat jaundiced take on the possible marketing drive behind the iCrap phenomenon

Are you sure this isn't how you're supposed to get your music you just made on your iphone, out of said iphone? - i can see how this could work - the music travels down the multi-purpose iCable until it meets the iDock / iCup rest - then travels through the various layers of iInsulation until it reaches the bottom of the filled iTea / iCoffee Cup  - here your world class music makes vibrations in the iTea / iCoffee which you then capture using one of those Old Fashioned, oh so last century  microphone things.

Clever.....................

Is it just me, or has anybody else noticed how awful iOS and Android apps really are?

I'm talking poorly designed, clumsy UIs, frequent hangs and general bugginess. Sheesh, even if it only sells for 99 cents, I'd just be embarrassed to release the kind of amateurish apps I've seen so far.

I will admit that I've not looked at any super-high-end software packages that sell for, like, 10 bucks.

Many of IK's iCraps sell for about $10 bones normally....

I've tried a lot of different Android apps....I've got an LG Thrill 3D phone...YES 3D....it takes 3D video and Pics...
Even the menu system is 3D...

But I sure wouldn't want to do anything of any importance on it (sound wise)...nope...but the Video and Pics are awesome
I have to say...that's probably why it was discontinued...
And I'm running Android 4....

Re: I just had a bad dream..... 2013/08/30 23:24:53 (permalink)
I'm using an Android phone, and for the most part it's just a phone. But after my back surgery I embarked on a weight loss regimen and figured that one of the many calorie-counter apps would be a convenient aid. I tried three of them, settled on the least-objectionable one and have been using it daily for 5 weeks now. (1400 calories per day + exercise -- f*ck me, I'm so frickin' hungry)

A simple database app should be a piece o' cake, but this app is awful. Every day I enter my exercise, and it doesn't remember what I put in yesterday. I have to choose my type of exercise from a scrolling list that defaults to "badminton". Badminton? I'd have designed it to default to whatever I'd put in yesterday. My elliptical exercise machine tells me how many calories I've burned but the app forces me to choose something from the menu and adjust the duration until the number of calories is close. Similarly, if I eat a 90-calorie yogurt cup, there is no way to enter "Yogurt, 90 calories". I have to choose from a brand name and adjust the quantity until the number of calories is close to 90. Quantities can only be halved or doubled, resulting in ridiculous entries such as "24 peanuts". And on and on.

Android and iPhone apps remind me of the kind of software we used to get for our Apple ][s for free or cheap way back when. Back then we were thrilled just to store telephone numbers on a computer. But that was 30 years ago. We should have made some progress.

I never really worked out why you need an app for something you can do in the web browser. About the only apps I use on my Blackberry are the calculator and note pad.

I am reading this forum on an iPad...... Resistance is futile.

Seriously, my company gave me an iPad. I have been using it for two weeks it's actually pretty nice. Five dollars got a very nice wireless remote control surface. Another five dollars got a very interesting midi controller called sound prism. IK multimedia amplitube is kind of cool..... But every time you want to do something you press a button and you have to buy another in-house app For 2.99. (Got the irig thingy very cheap at Best Buy where I see they're closing down their music stores.)

Perhaps because the iPad has been around a little longer than android, The iOS apps seem to be a lot more stable and functional. Even though that's what I hate about Apple it seems to be working in the case of apps.

Kind of cool to find out people have built programs that take wireless MIDI data from Apple product and make it usable on a PC.

I use an android phone, it's nice and some of the widgets are okay, calculator etc. I use it to call people and people call me - just like I've always used a phone. I don't have it hooked up to my corporate email account because I don't feel a need to be bombarded with idiotic nonsense from work 24/7/365. I don't text because I like a full sized keyboard and I prefer conversing rather than asking "hw r U?".

I'm old I know but I don't have a problem with young people walking around with their face glued to their phones screen...I actually find it humorous when they bump into telephone poles.

I wrote up a nice little XL workbook to log and aggregate what I eat and how much exercise I get (I log a bunch of other stuff also). I have on occasion been out and about and have sung a song idea into my phone so I wouldn't forget the idea. I was going to do a database application but it seemed like too much effort.

Lately I've been working with analog scripting devices and I find them almost flawless in execution. Granted I do have to sharpen the point on the write utility every so often but if I don't like what I've written I just ball up the storage medium and throw it in the trash. It's pretty cool.

Regards

I returned my i4s yesterday.
Back to my good old flip phone.
Put the SD card from my wife's old Android (she is the i4s Queen now)
and bingo I have an mp3 player and telephone all in one!
Amazing!
And the best thing, "drag and drop" tunes into the phone!
What? No iTunes to "help" you manage your music!
oh no! No! NO!
Everytime I tried to do anything, the damn thing fought me tooth and nail.
They do "bounce" well though! Pretty rugged with the case thingy my wife put it in!
Good thing too, I really did try to kill it (she bought the "insurance" with it).
But I'm better now...
T
Oh and she got an iPad too, offered to install Garage Band; I think now she's glad she didn't...

I hate cell phones and everything they've done to society. I won't have one (although I pay for three. Wife and two daughters). People at work think phones are a basic human right, I can't go out and eat or watch a movie without someone's freaking phone going off. They should be banned from existence and from recording gear world wide.

which are kewl...but, other then that...IT'S A PHONE FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD...
It basically is my Digital Camera....

I was in the Movie Theater the other day, look around right before the movie...

Absolutely 100% spot on, could not have said it better myself. and I'm no technophobe -
I have a Blackberry which I use as a phone and for email / text etc - very handy for business and keeping in touch.
I have an iPad - total toy useless thing
I have netbook computers - cheaper and better than an icrap ipad and have the added bonus of having nothing to do with APPLE!!
I have Laptops for music - couldn't do the live stuff these days without them
I have desk tops, mainly for music -

I guess I'm one of the odd guys out on this. I rather like playing with music data on my ipad. I admit that I use my regular DAW most of the time but I have gotten some decent results from the ipad along with the right apps. I'm not throwing the thing out for music. With iOS you can interconnect those little apps to play with one another. If nothing else it might give you an idea while waiting at the airport.

I was recently on a music site and there was a guy on there who was introducing himself. He was from Africa and when asked what he used to record he said his phone. I don't doubt that for many this is maybe the only option they have. It can be a viable option in a pinch, albeit most apps are geared toward loopers and Djs. Some are downright creative and fun. I found a killer drum pattern on one of my apps that I am going to use at some point.

If you remember the corded phone or the portable phone that weighed 20lbs. then you might be less prone to accept that these things are really computers that can make phone calls. I'm not calling you a curmudgeon mind you. Seems maybe just a different mindset.

If Cakewalk were to port to Mac or add an iapp that plays with Sonar I think it would be cool.

What could it hurt? The generated income would help to anchor a company that might need a little extra help and that's good for all of us.

As with anything, simply because many can't find a use for something doesn't mean it's useless and crap. For example, that little piano on the iPhone may be considered a toy, but that's the toy my wife used as a reference before she sang the national anthem for the Mets in NY and for the local team here in Vegas. And its a pretty common thing among singers as far as I can see.

Similarly, she was a guest on a pretty big rock concert last week in Canada. It was funny to see how many of the guys had iPads attached to a stand w/ charts and lyrics during the soundcheck. I remember the last time we were there, not that long ago actually - everyone had those big binders and flying sheets. The iPad does a much better job and is a much more efficient/professional option.

Keyboard players have long since integrated laptops and software like MainStage into their setup. It's pretty easy to imagine the transition to an iPad. And considering that one of the guitar players was using a floor POD Pro in place of an actual amp, it's not that hard to imagine people using soft amp sims like Amplitube on stage in a not so distant future. (Me, I'll stick to a good old Marshall though ;) )

One of the guys my wife and I jammed with last weekend was showing me how he uses Garageband on his iPhone to write and work on ideas while on the bus or subway. Naysayers say what they will - that guy has gold records on his walls, closets full of awards, he's worked with some of the biggest names in the industry for almost 40 years and is currently in the house band of one of the biggest shows on national television. Not exactly your amateur DJ wannabe.

He also uses an iPad to remote control Logic X - which imho is a much better and efficient way to integrate touch screen to your DAW than anything else.

It is not my intent to diminish the iCrap.....it is to say that it should NOT take PRECEDENCE over
those of us who have invested hundreds, or, more likely, thousands of dollars in software that
is FAILING to get support BECAUSE of iCrap.

THAT is the main issue...

When a company completely ignores those who have made it, to pursue other revenue, I take great issue with that...
I don't deny them new sources of revenue.

I have no doubt that iPads and iPhones are wonderful devices...they DO have a purpose...

BUT they should not be given PRECEDENCE over those of us who have BOUGHT countless programs
and plugins, etc...because a company wants to make an iDollar...

They could quite simply devote some resources to ONGOING and some to NEW....THAT is how a COMPETENT
company does business...not ignore support for the PC based products so they can pursue the iDollar....

I think THAT is the entire point of this thread...that if Cake has been ignoring a fix for X2 to pursue iCrap programs...
If they have then I'm done with them...

The remote programs are awesome BTW...

Agreed 100%. Actually, I should have said "as long as it's parallel development and that the main focus is on the big flagship tools..."
