I just saw a star...

...go really bright, then disappear.

It wasn't a shooting star/meteorite because it was static.  For the same reason it wasn't a plane or sattelite.

Could it be that a whole solar system just disappeared in front of my eyes?

    WOW!

Millions of years?  That must make me nearly as old as Bapu.

That must mean in several millenea I will become visible from other stars, that makes me feel so young again.

Older than Bapu hisownself, yet in places I am yet to be born.  This is too much to take in in one go I think I need to lie down for awhile.

Wake me in a couple of millenia, as I don't want to miss breakfast this morning.

No I have straight cut jeans on.   But that's not important right now.

Siriusly though I could see the star before it went bright, then it was gone.  Would that indicate a flare?

Lydd is nearest @8 miles but it is dead at night.

    London Gatwick/ 40 miles

    London Heathrow / 60 miles

Often you can see an aircraft that because of the near direct heading toward you that it looks static then glows brightly as it turns and the lights shine directly at you before eventually disappearing but those tend to flicker somewhat.  Being a bit of a plane spotter I'm very familiar with that sight so I'm discounting it.

This was a fairly dim star just sitting there along with the rest east of the 'Plough' constellation which was directly overhead here at that time, and was around 35 degrees up from the horizon line.

    This happens to me often.

    Here...try this....

    1. Make both your hands into a fist.

    2. Close your eyes

    3. Gently put the knuckle of your pointer finger against your right eye and the knuckle of your left pointer finger gently  to your left eye

    4. Rub your eyes by twinsting your hands back and forth for 90 seconds (ahhhhhh this should feel sooo good)

    5. After 90 seconds open your eyes ..

    6. Enjoy the colors and fading stars

Happens to me all the time!

I'm familiar with this and many chemically induced means of producing supernova's too.

I posted here at the time to get a time stamp and shall pass on the details to an observatory and hopefully get the lowdown.

Perhaps it was occluded by another object? An asteroid or moon, or even a vast cloud of dust. Or Death Star. Or that thing from The Fifth Element.
Check and see if it's there tomorrow night.

If it's a celestial object, I'm guessing it could be one of three objects Jon - maybe becoming apparently brighter because of high cloud moving away.

At about that time of night, in that part of the sky, I'd go for Arcturus (in Bootes) - the other two candidates would be Spica (in Virgo) or Saturn.

    Re:I just saw a star... 2011/04/13 08:03:15 (permalink)
It was very likely an Iridium Flare. Most people never see one because they are very short in duration and many are not very bright. Even the brightest ones last only a few seconds and can easily be mistaken for aircraft landing lights.

The website link below lets you look up the flares in your area... and I saw a link there for the past 48 hrs so you can check back to see if it was a flare.  Look under the "satellite" subheading.

    Flare Prediction

I also have an app on my phone for IF's and ISS over flights. I look for the ones that are -3 magnitude or better since they are bright. I have a -7 IF coming up on the 19th in the evening.

Sometimes, on a clear dark sky, if you search the heavens, you can find the satellite moving across the star field as it approaches the flare point. It is usually not very bright and therefore doesn't attract any attention from the casual observer. The entire flare to full brightness and back down generally occurs in about 5 seconds, so if you look away you will easily miss it.

Have fun looking, now that you know what they are.

    Why thank you Captain Jamesway

I'm actually still pretty au fait with the night sky even after all these years - my hobby as a youngster was astronomy. Mainly due to Sir Patrick, and the interest engendered by the moon landings.

For checking out what is on view each night, I can highly recommend the excellent (and free) STELLARIUM software - you just dial in your latitude and longitude and you're good to go.

Mind you, just last summer I spent about twenty minutes gawping upward as two UFO's moved slowly across the northern night sky. I wanted to rush upstairs and grab my telescope and my camera, but I was truly transixed as these objects drifted silently above.

    And yes.....

I know they were chinese lanterns now

Interesting stuff that mate - the 'seeing' around here is pretty bad to the east (the city) and to the north (we get the Birmingham conurbation 'glow' this far away). However, the new eco-summat-or-other streetlights they have fitted locally do help a little.

I side with the theory that it was a long gone star you were able to glimpse the light waves from at just the right moment.......................or maybe it has something to do with the fact that the universe is continually expanding..............I looked in the mirror this morning and knew this was true.
