I just used Sibelius 7 First trial for the first time...
... and I didn't have to read a manual or look at help.
I simply installed the program, and used my "mouse" to hand copy a 36 bar piano part of off some printed sheet music and export it as MIDI.
What a pleasure.
The ribbon top bar looked ugly like my Outlook install and it seemed to be unintuitive to an old time Windows user, I like the old menu drop down format... but other than that the actual app seemed to work real well.
I'm guess I'm buying it. :-)

Yep, Sibelius is a great program. I have Finale and Sibelius but Sibelius tends to be my goto.
I'm with ya on the menu bars - I still get frustrated using Word & PowerPoint with the new system - yuck!!! At least you could find what you needed and knew was there on the DD menus!
This is actually why I found Sibelius a welcome program after years with Finale. They are both are good, very deep and complicated programs but I found myself spending way too much time looking stuff up in Finale.
Finding the balance isn't always easy and I respect Cake for being on the forefront of technology and think they've done a fairly good job with that while trying to appease everyone - in fact, Cake has done a better job of it than MS IMHO. There's just nothing logical about hiding/burying simple commands behind oversized pretty pictures and under multiple levels of categories.

you mean the one that's owned by m-audio / avid now ? that was made in London, whose staff got the push... strange coincidence perhaps BUT seems like a bunch London programmers have been given a job with Steinberg now.. doing notation software... odd that... I'd not be in a hurry to buy "Sibelius" as the staff (pardon the pun) aren't with m-audio and I'd be surprised if it didn't morph into something else.. if your not in a hurry , wait to see what Steinberg turn up. It's actually a pity roland didn't buy em as it's a good area for money making with string etc. arrangers.

I love Sibelius! And used it for a long time. Fast, intuitive and really nice to look at.
BUT - what Fog says here, it's a little scary considering the latest development in the company structure. I have Notion for iPad and I'm really considering to check it out for my DAW.

FYI M-Audio is no longer part of Avid and Sibelius was never part of M-Audio. Steinberg hired the entire Sibelius London staff.

Avid still owns Sibelius. What happened is that they moved development to the Ukraine where they already had some development going on. They laid off all of the London Staff who were quickly snapped up by Steinberg. The Sibelius community is up in arms because they believe the quality will suffer. That might be true, we'll have to wait and see but Avid has stated that they are not selling Sibelius even as the original creators expressed interested in buying it back. Sibelius hasn't been owned buy the original creators in quite a while and, while I'm not an Avid fan, I think they have done a great job with development.

The beauty of it, as I see it, is that Sibelius actually works. I can buy it now and I don't have to depend on a promise that it's gonna get fixed 10 years later. That's been my point of contention with some particular software vendors. I feel that the vendors who deliver a funked up product that still needs work, perhaps an immediate patch the week of release, are in the minority and running a sloppy business. Most of the software I buy and use works really well right out of the box. It seems to me that I can buy Sibelius today and use it today just as I think it is supposed to work. I'm sure, that as a newbie to the app, that I am unaware of some issues, yet the $120 "First" package is probably all I'll ever need. On the other hand, Cubase is seeming very attractive these days and I'll bet Yamaha enjoys having Sibelius under their wing. I'd imagine that a keyboard or piano manufacturer can see how owning a top flight sheet scoring app seems like a good match. all the best, mike

Sorry for hijacking this thread but is it possible for me to use Sibelius 6 with sonar, so I can input notes Eric and assign them to soft synths?

What I did was export from S7 as MIDI and then just drag and dropped it into my DAW.
S7 lets you use your favorite soft synths with in as well. You'd have to look at the particulars of each "level" to see what suits your needs.
I'm just using the simplest version.

Sibelius works wonderfully EXCEPT that I've never gotten it to Rewire with Sonar
