I know I'm so Sonar 8 by why does snap...
...change on me every time I do something? I set the snap setting to 1/16 note, I go into the PRV to edit MIDI, it changes to 1/8. Then when I'm done editing I go back and it changes to a whole note?????? I am really confused. If I select 1/16, I want a 1/16 through and through. How can I accomplish that? Also, I'm having a problem losing my now time marker with the vertical line after I go into the PRV and then return. Is that a bug others have come across?

So if you set the snap to grid to 1/16 in the track view, that doesn't mean that the snap to grid setting in the PRV will be 1/16. Maybe this is your problem or maybe i'm not remembering correctly and its a bug. Cj

I think it changes as you zoom in and out to match your zoom level. It bugs me too. Must be a way to keep it steady through the zoom. I haven't looked for it yet tho.

X2? Yeah, that's the time ruler Zoom Snap feature thingy and it kind of sucks. I have yet to look up how to turn it off.

Same here, I hate when software tries to think for me. Like programs with menus items that change according to usage, now instead of knowing where something is, I have to look for it every time because it moved and then you can't develop muscle memory, gaah, turned off instantly. If it can be turned of I'd also like to know where, I want track view to always be measure, PRV always 16th's etc.. unless _I_ change it, as it is I constantly have to change it back.

I think you'll find it is the "Smart Grid" doing it's thing, which I love BTW. To turn it off left click and hold on the resolution selector and uncheck the "Smart grid" option. You can then set your preferred resolution which won't change. Remember that you can now set a secondary snap. Just hold N down while choosing parameters. You can then call it up by either holding down the N key and then releasing for just a temporary change, or pressing ctrl+shift+N for a permanent change. I have one set as the smartgrid and the other set to a fixed setting (which depends on my screenset). I think it's great once you used to it. YMMV of course PRV also has it's own snap setting that can be set and turned on or off by the controls toward the top right of the PRV. The global snap needs to be on for that to work, it's a snap over ride rather than independent of the global snap. Finally each screenset can have its own snap if you wish but you need to set a variable in the ini file. IncludeSnapInScreenset=1 HTH.

It depends on how you work I guess. If I just recorded drums, which I know is 16th's and go to fix a small error in PRV, set snap to 16th's, then zoom in, I don't need smart grid to change resolution, I still need to move notes by 16th's and I only zoomed in to get a better view so I end up fighting smart grid. Similarly, when I'm in track view I always record whole measure clips, there's no reason for changing the grid on me ever unless I specifically know I need to change it. If I zoom out and expect the grid to be measures and then move a clip or resize it so it fills a measure because I hit stop early, then the clip is changed on me again, I select the clip and hit loop selection, and it's totally off because it wasn't on measures like I expected it when I resized it to fit. It's just a constant fight against smart grid for me because I always know what divisions I'm going to be working with. Glad it can be turned of

Thanks guys. That helps me as far as the snap goes. I wonder what's up with my now time marker on the track view? Like I said while editing in a song last night, I would navigate away from the PRV to the track view and the Now Time Marker would be totally gone. So when playing my song there is literally no Now Time Marker showing me where I am. No vertical line, nothing. Anyone else have that? A bug or some other setting I'm missing?

Yeah, good thread, I haven't read up on the new snap yet and have noticed something I experienced as a bug but thought it wasn't because I haven't learned about the new snap yet. This thread helpes a lot - I'll figure this out tonight!

There's something else going on. I just installed X2 last night and this morning worked with PRV for the first time. I had smart grid on, PRV snap set to 16th, but in PRV couldn't snap to anything but Measures. Then I turned smart grid off, and set global snap to measures, and still PRV was snapping to measures even though it's snap was on 16ths. The only way I could get PRV to snap to 16ths is when I set the global snap to 16ths.

Right on, Karl. I guess I was being harsh in saying it "sucks" but it's a little overcomplicated IMO. I appreciate the extra functionality but having it set as the default is likely gonna screw a lot of people up... like me. I just turned off snap for now but I'm mostly working with audio so I'm editing at Zero Crossings anyway. Gonna need to figure it out next drum track I put together.

To change the default snap set it up how you want it and then overwrite the template using "save as.... type template". That trick works for a whole load of settings BTW.
