Outboard gear is expensive and and the good stuff is becoming harder to find as everything is going to plug-in based effects.

Can you explain in more detail what exactly you are asking for?

There are a few saturating plug-ins that work well for that reel to reel soft-compressed sound...  I don't ever use anything like that though as I work very hard to remove or record as little hiss as possible and these tend to add a bit of hiss.. in my opinion you can make tape hiss sound by turning an amp up on a speaker and just recording it with a mic.... it is almost the same thing and is made in the same way.. the electricity makes the electrons go crazy and so you hear them spinning faster and faster as you add more electricity. the other thing they usually do is lower the high end to soften the sound and today's standards are very crunchy in your face high end.... I don't use a lot of virtual synth stuff but I know tons of these guys use that stuff all the time... maybe one will swing by this forum.

I thought you meant presets like settings on a Mastering compressor or something like that.
