I played live drums to a "jazz without drums" YouTube thing
I moved my drums into my studio and now have crammed so much into this small room that I have to tread carefully entering and exiting. LOL. So, my goal is to get my drum chops back. I played live to a Randy Turner track and used 5 mics running through my Zoom R24. First time I used it to record live drums after owning it for a number of years. I had a couple of passes. No punch in or edits. I left it raw. I will add some tom mics next time but my tool box is pretty lean on the mic selection to say the least. Anyway, it is my Mom's birthday today though she is now in Heaven. She was so supportive of my drumming as I grew up. Driving me to drum lessons, taking me to gigs, making sure my homework was done and all. I love her for it. This little jazz thing is for her even if not all mine. https://soundcloud.com/jimmy-saad/jim-jazz-drums-10-14-13 All the best, Rimshot

Nicely present up-front sounds from the 3 close mics. You've got plenty more scope there to back those off to pick the toms up plenty more for a nice roomy live sound without anymore mics, especially if you were to use some lighter gauge metals in that space. Very nicely recorded though. It's a good sound, and kudos to your Mum there she did a good job of encouraging some pretty good chops too.

Great drumming Rimshot! You pulled off a lot of very technical fills and turn-arounds, especially considering only 2 takes and no punch ins. You've obviously still got plenty of chops left. :) I think the mics and drum mix are fine too. Very jazzy!

Hi Daryl - thanks for the nice comment. I did have fun. I should have set up my drums a long time ago. I guess I was so enthralled with the DAW I forgot my first love. Anyway, I am commin' back! Rimshot

Hi Jonbouy, Thanks for the listen and nice words. I will experiment in this room and see where to place the mics to pick you the toms. It's only a 10x11 room so I am very limited. For my very humble mic selection, I used Behringer XM8500's on the hh and kcik. I used an SM58 on the snare and a Behringer B1 overhead and a Shure SH55 as a side mic facing where the floor tom would be if I can get it in here! I only used one cymbal which is my 20" Zildjian ride that I used in hundreds of of studio dates. Anyway, I am so glad you liked the sound. I hope to keep at it for a while. I would like to play live on other's tunes. Take care. Rimshot

Hi Walt, Much thanks for the good words. There were some very technical fills and as I listen back, it sounds pretty good to me. I had no problem keeping in time. A long time ago I was a studio drummer and back then, some producers would take a timer and count the beats withing 15 seconds then wait a few and do it again and compare. If the totals did not match, they knew there was a tempo issue. When I played on Jimmy Messina's first album after Loggins & Messina called "One More Mile", he would do that. Those were the days before digital anything. BTW, Jimmy Messina is one great musician with a huge heart. I loved working with him. Thanks again. Rimshot

One of my buddies played drums..... I think that he was influenced by his dad who was a truck driver..... but his dad really liked jazz and big band music. I can recall more than one time being forced to set and listen to music with him. Understand that at the time we were into Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, etc.... the rockers of the day.... One of his favorite musicians was Gene Kruppa... what an amazing drummer. I did pick up an admiration for the music he listened to the more I heard it. I enjoyed your playing on this..... but I do think you should have perhaps bumped them a few db or maybe eq'd them a tad brighter....They do tend to be covered up by the guitar...

Hi Mike, I am glad you liked it. That was an interesting comment about leading. I my old jamming days, as a drummer I did lead quite a bit. I could bring the dynamics down or build them up - change beats and all and felt comfortable doing it. My buddies would just go right with it. I thought about this just recently and now you brought it up. You have a keen sense of music Mr. McCue! Thanks much. Jimmy

Hi Herb, I appreciate your story and listen. Gene was an awesome drummer and showman. He really brought forth the drums as a featured instrument and he had a great energy when playing. For my mix, I did it pretty fast so you may be right about the drum level. I tried to emulate standard cool jazz styles. This was fun and I am happy you liked it. Jimmy

Hey Kev, I am the drummer from Sue Saad & The Next. I had to hold back a lot back then because of the nature of songs we wrote. In fact, our songs were much less mature than our musicianship but we got a record deal! I wish you could have heard our unreleased 2nd album. We were much stronger and had a number of guest performers on it including Paul Stanley and Vinny Cassano (ex KISS lead guitarist) from KISS, David Foster, and more. Thanks for the nice comments Kev.
