I should of worked it out sooner.

It has sort of been plaguing my thoughts since James brought it up, that 'should of' instead of 'should have' is not so bad after all.  And I've worked out why I think that.

It is merely a bastardization of the contraction should've and thus spoken it would rarely cause an eyebrow to be raised.  Written down it does look wrong and nonsensical.

If we look at Mull of Kintyre as opposed to Mull have Kintyre it's easy to see where it causes some strange reaction in our ability to comprehend..

However if we have a well respected Army Major called Sir Archibald Broadback Should and he lived in Kintyre we could in fact say;

Should of Kintyre.

Conversely if our Major was in charge of a marauding force tasked with taking the town he could then say;

I should have Kintyre by noon.

So we know now that Should have and Should of are both acceptable by themselves and both have valid uses.

There is also another situation where a cyclist has a puncture and on realising he hadn't stored a spare in his pannier he might say where's that kin' tyre, but that is a scenario that isn't useful in this specific discussion.

So there we have it a corruption of a contraction which is unlikely to be heard when verbalised but looks strange to some when written.

My case for Should of, in place of Should have, perhaps could've come sooner but there we have it.

Any questions?

    You're confusing me:

    Should "of" be used or should "of" not be used?

     In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

    See this is what happens when I don't unplug my hands from the keyboard whilst pondering the universe.

    I should've just said if you want to say 'should of' where perhaps it should have been 'should have' then I'm OK with that.

    Got it?

    Mebee I just shouldn't have said anything...

    Being incredibly pedantic, I do like to see the correct use of 'should have' instead of the appalling 'should of'.

    But I am prepared to make exceptions.

    For instance, I can forgive anyone who says "I should of just slapped Noel Edmonds around a bit, instead of beating him unconscious".
