I think I inadvertantly pulled a Peart but my musical math sucks...

In my current creation there is kind of an intro bridge part that I played to a click in 4/4. The rest of the song is most definitely 4/4. Well as I was arranging it a couple weeks ago I wanted to try repeating it somewhere else in the song but the darned thing just would NOT fit anywhere timingwise. It was just weird and awkward no matter how I trimmed it or where I placed it but fits perfectly where it was. I just shrugged and kept writing leaving it where it was.

Today I'm doing some MIDI correction on the live drum synth performance and get to this part. Visually it is all over the freaking place. What I THINK should be landing on the 1 is not and well... it just looks sloppy as all heck. So I'm like "AHA!! I just recorded the guits out of time with the click. I'll just rerecord it."

Well I went through the bother of setting things up to record, muted what I thought were faulty drums following the bad take and practiced along with the click for a while to make SURE I was getting it right. I record the take and everything sounds golden with the click. Great. So I decide to compare the original take with the new one to see where I went off... and they are IDENTICAL!!!

lol... so the only thing I can figure is I went into some Rush-esque bizarro multiple time sig freakout while writing those few measures and I have no idea how to count it off. Even if I could trying to insert the sig change(s) into the project would be a nightmare for my n00b ass.

It sounds fine... just looks like ass. So it's gonna have to stay like that.

As far as I'm concerned, timing, like tuning, is for others.

Funny you should say that because bass lines are next... which at the rate I'm going may not happen 'til next year. :-/

The "Grid" is very unforgiving. It judges me.

I don't think I have one project which doesn't contain some musical element that I don't fully understand, whether it be rhythmic or harmonic. Most everything I compose by ear has some kind of odd time signature going on, or some kind of polyrhythmic weirdness that's best left alone without trying to understand it. The problem usually comes later on when I decide that I'm going to "get to grips" with the damn thing in the hope that doing so will facilitate a more organized approach to the arrangement. In the process, I usually mess with things to the point of ruining them

I'm just hoping it doesn't throw the drums and guit out of whack when I go to speed it up. I'll be rerecording the guits anyway (just a working scratch track for now) but I don't feel like having to pull an intricate slice and dice job just to up the tempo. I'm assuming all the riffs should move incrementally along with the drums but that remains to be seen. Otherwise I'll have to do it over from memory without a backing track which... well may be a bit of a pain because of all the subtle variations I put into it. Best I do it before I lay down the bass though.

That's why they don't put pictures of the PRV on Album covers!

I love figuring out timing puzzles like this. PM me for an e-mail address if you want to send me a track for analysis. I'm always having to reverse-engineer my own stuff because I compose by improvisation.

I intend to post this one eventually anyway (might be my last real offering to the songs forum other than maybe some collabs or messing around tunes because it's album writing time) but I may take you up on that after it's a little more cohesive because I'm kind of curious too. For now though I'm just hell bent on getting to recording my bass. I'm really dragging my feet on these MIDI corrections. Like a minute of material a day just making some minor beat corrections. I'll do a bit then get distracted by the internet or around the house. MUST.... FOCUS!!!!
