I could run through the gambit of plug-in counts etc., but SMTPE/MTC and Surround will be missing. If you use a lot of external gear I'd take that into consideration.=

I there SMTPE/MTC in X3 Studio?  I think your answer above was re X3 "Basic."  (I don't need surround).

I might upgrade for the first time since Sonar 7.  (Started using when it was Pro Audio)
Thanks!

I lilke that the Quad curve EQ has the meter info in it now. Very cool.

I use Addictive Drums and it sounds great!  Although I don't use the stock drums in AD. I have made my kit from several of the ADpaks available at XLNaudio.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Mod.. I think if one is used to a Pro Channel based workflow, it makes a huge difference.  Having the analyzer built into the EQ is big for me.  It is one less step i have to take.  For me, time is literally money.  If you barely touch PC< i can see your point.  Granted, $150 just to have an analyzer in your EQ is excessive, but combined with the other things may make it worthwhile.  Maybe Cakewalk should offer a minor courtesy discount to people who already own elodyne and Addictive drums and can prove ownership.  I realize that the licensing is done in bulk, so only so much could be offered, but maybe a $25 credit would show good faith and getting $125 beats 0.

Well, I'm deciding to give SONAR another chance and go for the Pro version.  I know that the Console view will disappoint me and the lack of mono inputs with friendly names will cause me to continue to use a work around in the browser.  Maybe the Melodyne ARA will keep me happy and fewer "what-the-frick-just-happened" moments  will occur in S1 when I click on the wrong thing or accidentally use the wrong hotkey.  We'll see.

SONAR X3 Studio does have SMPTE/MTC settings as does Producer.

all of the core functionality is the same in Studio as Producer, right?  The only difference is in effects and synths, whether pro-channel or VST, right?

We didn't drop support for the VS-700. The SONAR X3 installer still installs the components and we did not remove any functionality. I do know this is not an area we focused on with this release however, so I would expect the same functionality as SONAR X2a.

Thank you for that response Ryan.  Obviously, the VS-700 owner club is hoping for some kind of future software support from Cake. This is an enthusiast forum and not a support forum.... understood.  I suspect that with Tascam part of the team, we will see some future offering in the controller/interface category.
I realize that there is much going on behind the scenes we are not privy too, however I would like to point out a refreshing business model that AVID is using. (I recently upgraded from PT10 to Pt11)  PT is moving to the HDX system. They are throwing out a lifeline and allowing us to trade in our HD systems on the HDX system at a significant discount. The benefit of this is obvious. First, it assures a large user base that they are not being abandoned. Second, it allows HD users to upgrade without selling their first born. Third, it actually will broaden the user base over time.  Does Cake/Gibson/Tascam even want this user base? I don't know. I do know that I far prefer the CW workflow to PT.  Regardless, the next time you, Henry, and Craig share a cold beer, perhaps you could examine this concept... :)

Given the concept to rebrand SONAR as a TASCAM Professional Audio product, the impression I got was that, if anything, we want to do more to appeal to the professional market. With that being the case, I can't imagine VS-700 owners are not wanted :)

As far as trade ins, I really don't know. If I ever get a chance to have a beer with Henry or Craig I'll definitely share :)

I personally wouldn't want to trade in the VS700 hardware and can't see at the current moment why that would be a requirement. Over at Berklee we just updated all of our Pro Tools labs in the Electronic Production and Design department because, well, we had to. A lot of things were no longer fully functional. Even still we can't play a Quicktime video in the studio because the hardware doesn't support playback. Also, with the addition of all the new plug-in architecture we really just had no choice but to cough up the money for new hardware. I think it's great that AVID would offer up this type of option, but I also think they'd be crazy not to. Their business must continue of course. I'm not sure what the college is doing with the old HD192s we just pulled out of all of our labs and studios. I would imagine they've worked out a deal, but in the meantime the staff here was asked simply to throw it in storage. Crazy right? There's no need to put your VS-700R or VS-700C in storage :)

I absolutely love the V-Studio systems and I spent a great deal of my time working directly with hundreds of users on how to use the system. That was pretty much my entire job for over a year. As with anything, as our time working with companies grow, so do our responsibilities, and so for that reason I haven't personally had a lot of hands on time with the V-Studio hardware. With that being said, I do still love the system and think it is an excellent piece of hardware (even with some of the requests I have seen asked for new features not making it in to X3). The surface still integrates very well with SONAR, and the IO is a solid unit. The biggest thing I've noticed is that given the nature of the development of the product (drivers and hardware being made by Roland, control surface support being made by Cakewalk), any updates to it must be synchronized between Cakewalk and Roland and so the smallest request ultimately ends up being a big project.

Anyhow, why do I discuss all of this? Because while I'm not a product manager for Cakewalk, I have some pretty comprehensive lists of things I'd love to see done with control surface support in general. So, for whatever it is worth, one of the bigger bullets of "what can we do next" on my personal list of feedback was "control surface support". I don't know what the future holds yet for this area and what we'll do next, but I think its a proper conversation to have because it is an important area of the program.

Hi Ryan.  I've already carefully looked over the bullet list, from which I have gathered that the extras provided in Sonar X3 Producer are several software effects on the order of compressors, eqs, and reverb, and several software instruments.

In the past, I believe there were differences between studio and producer that could be considered "core functionality".  The studio edition did not include the full version of Audiosnap, or any basic drum samples such as Session Drummer, V-vocal, Convolution reverb, surround sound, etc.  These are types of tools which are widely appreciated in every DAW and the lack of which made the Studio edition of Sonar 6, for example, significantly less valuable than the Producer edition.

I believe that, especially at a 300 dollar price difference for new users, the current editions of Sonar are not adequately differentiated.  In fact it amounts to something of an un-advertised price drop, given that the current Studio edition at 200$ is essentially feature-equivalent to Producer version 8 or so at 500$ new.  Cakewalk might be better served following the example of Magix/Samplitude and Ableton by labeling the high price tier the "Suite" version.  This presents to the consumer a clear differentiation of in what way Cakewalk sees the Suite edition as offering more value.

Furthermore, I believe that, by allowing prior users of Producer-only features to continue using those features when upgrading merely to the Studio edition (partially a consequence of the lack of core feature differentiation), Cakewalk is not providing adequate imperative to current users to stay in the Producer upgrade path.

Thanks for your attention.

Sad for me...

This seems by far the first of the X generation that I might like... But I'm so broke I can't come up with the $200 needed for a boxed version... 13GB is more than my entire monthly download allotment...

This promises to be the hardest winter for me to survive... But if I do, I'm sure the first chance I get I'll be buying Producer.. If only to stop my screams during comp work! ;-)

Also, personally I'd never go back to not having ProChannel. The flyout EQ is ridiculously nice.

I'm glad you found a way... I hope you make some great music with it...

I will be (loudly) cursing many things for some time to come it seems. A month ago I could have squeezed it... Maybe something lucky will come my way... My "credit card" is a prepaid, so there's nowhere to borrow from... Oh well... At least I now can believe there's a fix out there for me as soon as I can afford it... Hmmm... I do have a half day session on Wednesday.... Time will tell...

All my best...

I see that Ryan and Andrew have posted in this thread so I thought I would ask them a question here rather than starting a new thread.  Can you please tell me if X3 has gotten a Countdown to Playback feature for it's Metronome ?  I've made this feature request through official channels since 8.5, something like this:

This feature alone would make me seriously consider upgrading from X2 Producer to X3 Producer.........

Over at Berklee we just updated all of our Pro Tools labs in the Electronic Production and Design department because, well, we had to. A lot of things were no longer fully functional.

Ha...when I was at Berklee in the 70's, that "dept" had an ARP 2500, a bunch of 2600 and a couple of Odyssey synths.  Also a single ARP sequencer and a whopping 10 band Tapco EQ.  The studio across the street had the black faced MCI board, AKG BX10 reverb, 1176, etc...but a great mic locker.  Only an 8 track MCI machine too, I believe.  I've still got my 1/2 track tapes from both departments!
