I think I'll do it...

I've found this picture of a 2013 SGJ w/ a pickguard.
 

 
 I'd probably try to find one w/o the white plies, but in the worst case, I wouldn't mind. The issue isn't strictly cosmetic - having the tip of my fingers constantly rubbing directly against the grainy/porous wood isn't especially enjoyable - but nevertheless, I do think it could be an improvement. I've already ditched the truss rod cover and replaced it with a regular black one, w/o anything on it.

    first thing i'd do with an axe like that, would be to rip the pickups out, and put in a set of L-90's from bill lawrence Wilde

    Yeah, I keep going back and forth. Last night, I had the pick guard in my virtual basket and I came that close to placing the order. This morning, I'm not all that sure anymore. If I could get one with a matte finish, it'd work a lot better.
     
    As for pick ups, I've never tried or heard them L-90s in person. To be perfectly honest with you, I've always played whatever pick-ups were on the guitar when I bought one. So these 490s are probably the best humbuckers I've played. Which obviously doesn't mean anything objectively - only that I can't complain about them. Ignorance is bliss.
     
    Second best would be the ones on my Epiphone Les Paul Traditional, which are based on Gibson's Burstbucker and Classic 57, and which sound warmer to my ear - but the difference between the LP and the SG obviously plays a big part in that, so I can't really tell.

    well, that pickguard looks great.
     
    the 490's aren't bad,
    and i dig burstbuckers, but
    the L-90's are superb.
     
    they do not look stock, if that is your bag.

    It's fun stuff to do- messin' with guitars...
     
    You could use double-side tape before drilling holes-no damage done while you decide.
     
    Pups are expensive and you're taking a big chance by what others hear...if you want to
    play around with them I recommend;
    Bypass the electronics- rewire the pups directly to the output- then you can hear what the electronics are changing. Much cheaper to play with caps/pot values than pups and you get a chance to learn a little...by using your ears...and you get to have some equipment (iron) that's not expensive and good to have if you're interested in modifying guitars.
    Depending on how the pups are wired you may be able to split etc. without having to modify the pups coil wiring.
     
    Many adjustments to make that I'd recommend to hear tonal options before spending a relative large amount of coins. Lot of info on youtube about such things and it's not hard to do.
