I think I'm Ready to Upgrade, But I need to know........
Hi All! I have a birthday quickly approaching and I'm going to finally take advantage of the chance to upgrade to Sonar X1 from Sonar 8.5. I just went to the Cakewalk E-Store and it looks like the only way to purchase Sonar X1 is through "download". Is this correct? I would love to have the "Discs" with the program on it as opposed to just downloading it from the web (it just feels better to me to have a physical copy). Has it ever been available as a "Boxed" version as opposed to a Download? Let me know folks. Thanks!

Never mind!! I went back to the E-Store and found out that I can pay an extra $30 bucks to get the boxed version after paying for the download. That's kind of wierd!!

The boxed version will probably be out of date and will require updates anyway. In addition, X1C is about to be released. I would save the $30 for something else! Perhaps a VST? In any case, have a happy birthday!

You can buy the upgrade from Sweetwater, Guitar Center ... etc. You'll get the disc's at no extra charge. They may not come in the box, but you will get the discs along with a short manual and a big foldout key chart.

FWIW, I think Cakewalk is trying to "encourage" folks to go with the download option. Less expensive... less wasted paper/resources/etc You always have access to the download and you can burn the install package to DVDs... so it's not risky. This of course assumes you have a fast Internet connection. If not, buy the DVDs...

Jim Roseberry This of course assumes you have a fast Internet connection. If not, buy the DVDs... Why would I spend $30 extra for DVD's from Cakewalk when I can get them for free from Sweetwater or any other retailer? I can see a shipping/processing fee of $10, hell, even $15, totally understandable, but $30? That ain't right, that's just pure greed in my opinion. If it costs so much more for packaging then why can I buy a boxed version from retailers at the same price as the download from Cakewalk? It's like you are being punished if you want to buy DVD's from Cakewalk directly. Like I've said before, that may not be the case, but, perception trumps reality.

If it costs so much more for packaging then why can I buy a boxed version from retailers at the same price as the download from Cakewalk? Several factors... First, Cakewalk (or any other company) can't undercut (or compete directly with) their dealers. If they do... they won't have those dealers for long. Hard-copy packages certainly cost additional money. Once the download infrastructure is in place, there are no additional costs per sale. Each hard-copy costs money to produce and ship. The reason why you can buy the hardcopy at a dealer for the same listed price? That because the dealer buys at 40% or 50% off (depends on the deal they negotiate)... and these choose to sell at MAP. There has to be some incentive for the dealers to stock/sell the product. To answer your question, why would I choose to pay Cakewalk the extra $30 for the shipped DVDs? Well... I wouldn't. I bought the download...

I opted to get the disks as well. I don't like being dependent on a download to restore.

JSkeen I got my copy from sweetwater for 100 bucks with free shipping. I hate big downloads!!! I got mine from Sweetwater and I hate big downloads too. I never was able to get Studio One downloaded when they had that $20.11 sale. I tried on 3 completely different networks and PC's and every one of them stopped halfway through the download. I tried again a couple of months after the sale thinking it was just heavy traffic on their site and still no go. Tried download resuming software and it kept forcing a complete restart of the download. Oh well, at least it was only $20.11. I'm ok with downloading some things ... but man, when you get over 150 ~ 200MB ... come on? A lot of ISP's will kick in their FUP (Fair Use Policy) and either kick you, or cut your speed by 80% for 30 days. It never ceases to amaze me how people will justify one corporation charging them more for the exact same product they can get elsewhere for less. I'll never get it. So ... Ladies and Gentlemen, this deceased equine has been thoroughly trounced. Time to move on.

Hmm.. I think I understand both sides here, but I have to go with 'Bub". I ususally buy my products from Sweetwater anyway, but I didn't realize that this (CD's included thing) was the case with this product. I'm unemployed right now and only use my studio to suplement my income from my regular job anyway, so money is very, very tight right now! Saving $30. bucks on this transaction would, and does, create an attractive proposal for me at this point in time. Thank you all for your insight and different views on the subject. Corporate America is an interesting bird!

FWIW, I did the downloads and then made backup copys on DVD. I never had a minutes trouble with the connection. If something bites the dust, I always have my backups. I got the free upgrade from 8.5. The best deal I ever made. I know that some people still have dial up and service is unreliable in places. Before I got DSL, I used to go to my wifes office and use one of their computers there with a fast DSL connection. If you know someone willing to help you that way it might be worth looking into. Also the manuals are available as downloads as well. Though, you don't want to even think about printing out an 1800 page manual! It sits on my other computer for quick reference. Hope this helps you.

Jim is right. They had an offer if you bought 8.5 within a certain time frame of last year they gave you the free download of X1. I believe it was within 6 to 8 weeks before they made X1 available. Best investment I ever made. Although, I used 8.5 for about 2 months until I learned X1. Then it was all X1 from then on. 8.5.3 still sits on my hard drive, both 32 and 64, but they haven't been touched since the last of January, other than to refresh my memory of the old Sonar workflow. LOL
