I think we found it!
The house... We'd only seen a couple of pictures, and my expectations were fairly low. IOW, I really wasn't all excited about even visiting it. Sure enough, when we drove there, I appreciated the neighborhood. All nice houses, well kept and clean. When we arrived there, the first thing I noticed was the japanese ornaments on the gates leading to the back of the house. I've always been a huge fan of all things "asiental". Same thing on the iron gate that leads to the main entrance and similar ornaments in the windows. And a few things here and there that could belong in a japanese garden. There's a lot of work to do around the house, outside, but I thought we were off to a good start. And the house itself is great. Then we entered. That place is huge! And when I looked on my right, I was totally sold: The glass door that separates the kitchen from the dining room has a painting of a japanese warrior on it! The kitchen itself goes on forever and it looks like it could hold a sushi bar. I walked all the way down to find a gigantic room w/ a hot tub, enough room to store 3 or 4 big pool tables, and walls made of stone. Like, the best room to throw parties - even though we're the quietest/most reclusive people in town. As a musician, the first thing I thought was - wow, I want a huge Fazioli in that room. lol The down-side is that the rooms at my disposition for the studio itself are rather small - which is a shame because, if the house was divided otherwise, there'd be plenty of amazing spaces for a studio. They're small and have some pretty wicked reverb, so I'll have a lot of work to do to make up for that. At least I know that if I ever need to do some serious tracking, we'll have all the place we need. So I'm crossing my fingers for this one. In the best case, we'd like to move in in April. And I can't wait.

Home is where the heart is Rain. It seems this place speaks to your heart (and hopefully to hers too). Go for it big time my friend.

Yup. She's the one who found it actually, through a friend of ours, who's a real estate agent. Me, I make due w/ whatever I have to deal with. The place where we live now isn't that great. But it doesn't bother me much. I've lived in a 10 x 6 room for over 2 years and it never bothered me. It does however have quite a negative impact on her, so she's been house-hunting quite a lot recently.

Large rooms can make for killer natural reverb too! Nice find.

The best thing I ever did was get married, buy a house, and let the roots grow. Something happens in your head... it was good.

The large room in the back w/ stone walls would probably make a terrific live room. And the nice thing is that there's a large bay window and sliding doors between that room and another spot I've located (part of the living room) w/ a high ceiling (and at an angle) which I could totally use as a control room. But for now I have more humble ambitions (and budget) so I'll stick w/ one of the smaller rooms. The good thing is that, I'll still have my portable set up, so nothing prevents me from picking up the laptop and experiment tracking in other rooms. I'll probably try that w/ electric guitars for starters.

Fantastic! That sounds great. For a couple of quiet, reclusive artists, having a home where you can retreat in comfort is a great thing.

Congrats on the new home Rain!! This summer, we too will be looking for a permanent home (like Mike said) to plant our roots in FL. Will you be treating the walls/room to get a decent sound (I know most homes in Vegas are "cookie cutter" homes that use cheaper products when building and not very good for audio recording)?

The best room in my house for tracking is a large upstairs family room that has wood flooring, vaulted ceilings and an irregular shape to the room. Unfortunately, all of the bedrooms link off of the room and it is one of the most popular rooms in the house. Once the family went to grandma's for spring break, so I hauled everything up there and did some tracking. The room dynamics that I was getting were fantastic. Unable to really utilize this room however, I pretty much went the keep everything dead or tamed route and add my own room ambiance.

Thanks - hopefully it'll work. And good luck to you. :) Yes, I'll have to do some serious work on the acoustics. I've already started planning that way back in January, shopping around for stuff to build bass traps and all...

Thanks guys. Just took the next step and met w/ the lady who's in charge, filled a the application and we're now waiting. Should have some news by Monday. If it all works, we're looking at starting to move in (painting and all) around March 20th. I'll try and post more pics. :)

Well, looks like someone applied for it a mere 45 minutes before us... And was approved. That stinks. But as I'm never one to get my hopes up too high... Oh well, maybe the next one will have a bigger room for my studio.
