I thought I was done...

Drooling over guitars. For a while. And then I saw this:

Les Paul.

Black.

7 strings.

Should be mine.

Sweet!  (One too many strings for me though...  I prefer a baritone with six and a guitar with six - what a wimp, eh?)

I've actually never played a 7. But I'm looking forward to trying one and hopefully buying one.

But since I have very traditional tastes for guitars, most of the 7 strings I've seen didn't really interest me. I know it's silly, but, that's how it is. Even my old strat doesn't really get much used anymore.

Anyway, I think a 7 strings could be useful for the stuff I'm working on these days. And if it's a LP, and black, I have all the excuses I need. ;)

Love the transparent black.  I 've noticed a few Gibby LP in transparent black, as of late, also.  Don't think I would want to deal with the 7th string, though....it would just mess me up.  I don't even have to  think about chording the guitar anymore and that would make me have to think about what I am doing again.

Do you think a 7 string guitar would be harder to mix and more prone to muddiness?

If it was being played by the typical kid who thinks he needs to have a 7-string guitar, then yes.  If played by someone who actually knows what they're doing?  Nah.  You just need to give the bass player a 5-string bass with the extra string being a low-B.

Interesting question. I would think that it would at least sound cleaner than a 6 strings tuned down - but that's an uneducated guess, based solely on the fact the fact that you have access to a bigger string to handle those lower notes, instead of just reducing the tension on a regular E string. I could be totally wrong, though.

The guys in Meshuggah play 8 strings and they sound darn tight as far as I'm concerned. The bass player must hate them, though. ;)

That's also admitting that you also have the right cab. Those guys playing 7 strings seem to like oversize cabs - from what I understand it helps pushing the ugly resonance lower so that it contributes to the massive low end instead of just muddying the low mids.

I wondered this same thing, will this just contribute to more low end build up and 2 instruments fighting for the same frequencies.  Is it better to let the guitar handle the higher frequencies and let the bass take the low?  Seems like I am always highpassing some of the guitar to make better use of the bass.

I'm really no expert in the genre and I'd need to further analyze, but they seem to manage to get them to co-exist. Low end seems ok and the bass has plenty of definition up higher.

I guess that wouldn't fall into the easy listening category, though. But it gives an idea.

    Hi,

    Yeah ... I can't stop looking, either!

What is weird to me, is seeing, mostly, just conventional instruments ... instead of further and stranger ones ... gads ... I wanna learn to play the double-stick! ... but Bapu won't let me! I'm thinking ... bass on bass on bass on bass with different sounds ... but that's too weird for here?

Btw, Egberto Gismonti has his own built 8 and 10 string guitars ... and his early accoustic albums with those, are insane, amazing and quite good. Although some folks don't seem to like freeform music that is not locked down to a clock! This was, then, ECM at its best freeform ... a veritable Keith Jarrett on guitar!

    Hi Rain-

I bought a seven a few months ago, 'cuz I can't resist temptation. The good news has been that playing it has mostly been a snap to pick up. The only confusion in chording is remembering that the base chord forms we all have learned are the same if the think from the high E down. The shapes starting on the low B are similar too being that we're dealing with a fifth again.

The tonality has been fun as can be. I love the sound, and it does inspire me to try new things. I haven't done much lately, as I've been involved in something else. But, I do enjoy playing it quite a bit. I didn't go all out. I bought a lesser-expensive one and installed high-end pickups in it. It sounds and plays great.

The funny thing is I haven't recorded it at all yet. Maybe I'll try it later with some bass and drums just to see how easily I can find space for it.

    Best of luck!

    Thomas Battaglia

Fortunately or unfortunately, Epiphone doesn't seem to be making them 7 strings any longer. Though I did find a sunburst on ebay for $679... But the bass is higher on the priority list, for now. My wife has her eyes on a red shortscale Mustang - that could be interesting.

I see 7's almost every day in my FB newsfeed and like the idea, but it just never really clicked before. The fact that it's a Les Paul just made it a lot more real though, like, now that's speaking my language.

I suspect the 7 strings must be a lot of fun to play, and would probably be quite inspiring. Just like I always have tons of ideas when I pick up a bass or even just use the pitch shifter on my amp to push everything down. Ideas just seems to flow out non stop.

Rain.... You will never get over guitar GAS. There will always be one calling your name when you least expect it and that is the way it should be. It is a love affair where infidelity is expected and welcomed. So many guitars, so little time. I am that way about guitars but more so about amps. I can get all 'Ot N Sweaty about a new amp in a heartbeat... I have to be careful.
