I upgraded to SonarX2 Studio in August

In August of this year I responded to an e-mail from Cakewalk. SonarX2 was available to me as an upgrade for a pretty reasonable price. I decided it was time.
Within two months SonarX3 in released. I didn't know it was coming. I would have waited and even paid a little more for a more current version. Now I would have to pay again! Man! For the price of the two upgrades, I could get producer instead of studio! ARG!!!

I got a similar email (as we all would have) but didn't bother as I wasn't using X1 enough to justify it. But if I had gone for the X2 upgrade then X3 I would have saved myself a $. So check the upgrade paths. You might find that if you were to go all the way to X3 Producer you might still be in front. I could be totally wrong there though.

There was a 50% off offer in August so there should be no penalty for upgrading in August. Which version did you upgrade from and to?

i suspect your "reasonable price" was half what most other folks paid.. that in itself is the clue that a new version is coming.. its standard practice in software companies (checkout how NI prices upgrades etc). So i dont really see how you are at any sort of loss.. wait until next August to upgrade to X3 and you will be speding half of what most users do here, and have more stable software.. just 10 months later :)

As a good example of how this would have worked out for me:  I had X1 Producer.  To go to X2 would have been $50 in August.  I knew this meant that X3 was likely on the horizon based on typical Cakewalk upgrade history.  Sure enough the X3 version came out.  To go from X1 to X3 producer was $199.  If I had upgraded to X2, the upgrade from there to X3 would have been $149.  So in the end, it would have been pretty much the same either way if in the end I wound up with X3 Producer.

Is this the same as what you experienced?  If so, you shouldn't feel ripped at all.

Thanks Blades. I checked a little deeper and found that if I waited, I would pay $149 to upgrade to x3 studio from where I was. As it is now I would have to pay $99. That plus the $79 I did pay is just $30 more...but still... If I had gone with Producer it would be a $50 difference. Ultimately, with a tight budget, if x2 Studio had been any higher back in August, I probable wouldn't have upgraded at all. So I guess I shouldn't complain.

Hi Andrew, I upgraded from Music Creator 6 to X2 Studio paying $79. I looked at it a little closer and found that if I had waited, I would pay $149 to have X3 Studio. If I upgrade now from X2 Studio to X3 Studio I would pay $99. So if I had waited and upgraded to X3 Studio from Music Creator 6 I would have saved $30. Not as big a difference as I thought when I made this post and not enough difference to make Producer that much cheaper so I guess I shouldn't complain. With a tight budget, I may not have upgraded at all if you had not made that offer in August.

Thanks Soft Enerji. Cool name, I'll check out your music. I looked at it a little closer. It's a bit confusing, but I it looks to me like I would have saved a little money if I had waited, but not as much as I was thinking when I made this post.

Thanks Mystic. A closer check reveals I only lost $30. If I take your advice and wait for the next price drop, I will be better off.
