marcus3, Advertising has persuaded some people that learning another language is quick and easy. "Speak Spanish like a diplomat in 21 days." Yeah, right. I spent a couple decades of my life learning another language (way easier than Thai), and I'm still looking up words and learning new expressions. How badly do you want to learn to speak Thai as well as English? Enough to spend years studying the kind of thing in slartablartfast's link? Enough to spend a couple of years in Thailand after that? What's your native language, BTW? How did you learn English? Mitch_I

If not living in Thailand, I guess the next best thing is someone who lives here and is a native Thai speaker..... does this have anything to do with that young lady? Asking her for lessons might just be the key to learning it, but to make any language as comfortable as your native tongue takes time and you must speak it constantly. I tried to learn Spanish just because I wanted to learn a language. After going through and completing 3 levels of a course, I can speak it well enough to get myself into trouble ..... but not out. I spent a few weeks in Argentina and got along fairly well on my own. I lived for a week with some folks who spoke no English and we had some simple conversations with the aid of a Spanish/English dictionary from time to time. I have no doubt that if I had the freedom to spend 6 months totally immersed in the country and the language, I would be able to get along well at the end of that time. The problem is, who today has the time and finances needed to do that? I guess one could always go there and apply for a job as an English teacher. I've heard of a number of folks doing that very thing. 2 folks I know are doing that right now.....both teaching English as a second language.....one in Chile and the other in China.

I know enough Spanish to order Tex-Mex food. I can't speak French, but I can use a French accent that sounds a bit like Pepe le Pew. French waiters really enjoy that. When I use the French accent in a German restaurant, someone inevitably knocks my table over. If I break out my Italian accent at the local Olive Garden, the manager comes by to have a chat. He seems concerned that the other diners may feel intimidated by my mastery of the language. I don't actually speak sailor, but I figure Pirate is close enough when I go to Popeye's Chicken. Given enough attempts, I can eventually order food at a McDonald's in Newark. I won't get what I ordered, but that's normal for McDonald's. Also, I'm not certain, but I'm beginning to suspect that the guy in the crown at Burger King may not actually be royalty. He doesn't sound anything like Dick Van Dyke.

2 problems easy to remedy for the first one..... get to know a few US Marines and hang out with them for a few days. Especially if they have been Drill Instructors (DI) at some point in their career. As a DI mastery of the "sailor language" is a prerequisite to being a successful DI. Colorful and creative use of the sailor language is an art-form to those guys. You will enjoy just listening to them turn a phrase. for the second one.... learn E-bonics ... Den youz beez chillin wit the boyz and gurlz enn beez abul 2 gits duh tings rite duh firss time.

Based on the thread title, and the missing "to" in " I want Learn a language"..... I was thinking English wasn't your native language. As to the rest of the comment.... I hate to be the bearer of bad news.... BUT....
