How come you're in Scotland James? Work? Play?

A wonderful place, I hasten to add, although I've only been north of the border a couple of times. We spent a couple of weeks in our camper in 2005. Turned right to spend a night on the Mull of Galloway... Went up to the top of the lighthouse there. Then we travelled up to the south end of Loch Lomond. Then on up the west side... Fort William and west/north up to Mallaig. The beaches around Mallaig are stunningly beautiful. And then we headed back and came down the east side of Loch Lomond.

Big Sky... Big Mountains... Excellent roads...

We mean to travel right to the top, next time, whenever that may be...

Moved here 16 years ago Andy, couldn't afford to move where we were (Cotswolds), and we needed some land for the horses. I'm about 20 miles from the Mull of Galloway!

Roads are bloody awful here, constantly wrecked by the hurtling timber lorries. You could shut your eyes and you'd know when you reached Dumfries & Galloway...

A very sad and unfortunate state of affairs and this happens everywhere across the UK. Gets me quite mad thinking about it actually...

I think we stayed pretty much on the main roads and it wasn't until we got past Fort William that roads started to feel like the country lanes of Wales, for instance (another lovely country). Then again, we spent the first night up at Loch Trool, which was nice, so, yeah, those roads, away from the main A75 were a bit "rough" in places.

And the midges were a nightmare that first night! We had no idea! Woke up covered in little red blotches and the camper was filled with the midges. It was Sunday morning and I remember thinking, " everywhere is going to be close." But, fortunately, there was a hardware shop open in a little place called Newton Stewart so we called in and got some fly spray and a pack of those sticky things.

We made our way back to the A75, pulled over in a layby, emptied out anything that wasn't fixed and nuked the little feckers!

Ha, I live 2 miles from Newton Stewart! That would have been Home Hardware in Victoria Street I have several customers in Glentrool, and yes, the midges are horrendous in the summer, especially early morning on a damp day.

They don't bite me but they get in my ears, up my nose...AAARRGGHHH!

I have been known to wear one of those! That Skin-So-Soft is useless, all that happens is the midgies stick to your face. If it gets unbearable I spray my hat with Raid, the smell keeps 'em off for a couple of hours. Luckily I don't smoke...
