James Taylor?  I'd rather have Carly Simon in a box...

(And I'd also like to hear what you think about the JT Variax - remember to use a TRS cable!)

I tried to get into the box and it was too small so I'm sending out for another one I told them I was XXL.

My take on the JTV 69 so far-

The guitar was shipped without any blemishes. The red color I ordered is a deeper more apple red which I fell in love with. I didn't want a loud red if you know what I mean.

It came with the strings loosened(or it had detuned from humidity to the extreme) I spent some time tuning it up and had to tune it several times over several hours.  I broke the high E string. I attributed this to my lack of experience with locking tuners. It shipped with Daddarios, it has an Ernie Ball 10 on the high string now ;-&

I ordered the Variax cable that runs from the HD500 to the variax as the cable they give you is mainly intended for updates with the usb interface if you need to update that way. In my case I have the HD500 and Line 6 monkey will update the guitar directly through the HD500 with no need for the interface. The guitar needs no battery if you plug via variax into an HD or X3 type of box. The battery allows use of the models apart from the HD500.

Before I played the guitar I added strap locks as I didn't want to be accidentally dropping this thing. Since keys are my first instrument I have never and probably will never have the opportunity to try 30 different guitars nor can I really tell you how they all atre supposed to sound with the exception of the lester and the fenders. I know vaugely how they are supposed to sound. I was very impressed with the models initally, especially the fender ones.I got the feeling that some of the effect of the models might have been different if they were being played through a real amp and not my studio monitors. Some of the lester models were not quite as sharp or did not seem to have as much high bite as the real guitars, but then I have not played with the workbench software or dial in any eq.They were still convincing though.

The acoustic emulations were pretty convincing although I had to acclimate to a feel that worked for them. TONs easier than trying the same chords on a real acoustic guitar.

Overall I am very pleased with this guitar. As I said I don't have enough years to go round' guitar sampling,so for me this is likely the main guitar I will play and I won't have a "collection" of guitars.

The additional pickups in the HSS config. were icing on the cake. They sound really good.

The models can be tweaked and even invented,so the possibilities are many here.

One feature I haven't used with mine (I have the guts of an original Variax 500 in one of my custom guitars) is the ability to have alternate tunings on the fly.  I'm looking forward to creating a few and adding them to the "Custom" setting on the selector knob.  You just have to make sure you don't listen to the low-volume "real" strings when you play!

I've found that I use the acoustics the most, then some of the guitars that I don't have real versions of (like the Ric's).  Still cool though!

I toyed with the tunings briefly. It will take some getting used to for me. Not the strings sounds but playing in alternate tunings.

I'm waiting for the hot rodders to disembowl a JTV and put the "guts"into something else. I do like the present model enough already though.

Since I'm not really a guitar player, the alternate tunings are not the strong point of the guitar for me.

My desire, like you, is to have options open to me (Ricks, acoustics, especially 12-Strings) that I won't need to break the bank for (i.e. 6 guitars minimum) nor spend countless hours hunting down.

The tunings would definitely be a selling point here. I just find them so inspiring. I used to use them a lot when I had a few more guitars, but I'm too lazy to constantly be re-tuning my main ones.

Can it also be "taught" new ones? I have a couple of little variations to standard open tunings that I sometime like to use...

Anyway, I guess it'll be a while before I can afford one of these.

You can set up your own tunings on this guitar.  I only used drop D before this and even then not very often. You guitar aces have your ears acclimated to those odd tunings.  I need a little help in that regard.

For me learning one system and then getting used to it and then learning another system can be a challenge, kind of like alternate scales. I can do it but I will need to spend weeks working with the "new"tuning. In the end I'll probably only use them if it is somehow a better way to get where I want to go. The guitar also has 1/2 step lower which might help with a tough vocal and it has 1 whole step lower, but the jury is still out on this one for me.

Which alternate tunings do you make the most use of? I plan to play it on Sunday for most of the set on some of the fender and acoustic settings using variax only. Practice went pretty well last night so we'll see ;)

Have not bought anything new in a long while.

I think this is my next purchase....wow.  With the tuning switch it is over the top.

1400 is a lot though, I will start saving my pennies for sure.
