I wish I could sing in tune...

Hi,

I would like to control my vocal in an audio track with a midi data track playing a melody line.  I am having trouble sending the midi data from the midi track to the auto tune VST in the FX insert on the audio track.
I'm using:
Windows XP
Sonar 4 Producer Edition
Antares Auto-Tune 5

I have clicked on the "Target notes via MIDI" button on the auto-tune and I have played with the output on the midi track but it's not happening for me.  I've tried the Auto-Tune manual and it says -

"Refer to your host application’s manual for details on how to route MIDI to Auto-Tune 5"

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Welcome to the forum.

I'm a Melodyne-user, so unfortunately I can't answer your question, but an opinion I have:
I believe you'll get much more natural results just recording the vocals first and then doing the correction according to need. Forcing it to follow a MIDI track might lead to unnatural details. I'm not sure if you're planning to do it real-time, but if you are, I'd also recommend doing the corrections post recording..

IIRC there might be some limitations in 4PEs ability to route MIDI compared to newer versions, but I'm not sure.

The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

    Hi Adam,

I don't use Autotune but I do use VST effects which need MIDI routing to them (e.g. Amplitube). I think you need to check the 'Configure as Synth' option in the plugin's properties to allow it to receive MIDI. There is a thread over at Gearslutz which may help you.

I use Auto tune and have never managed to figure that out. I used to have a Digitech Vocalist that followed MIDI for harmony and tried to get auto tune to work, Gave up.

Try this, The Johnny V cheater method for pitching vocals, ( not that I need it ha ha,,, sorry,, : )

Record your melody to MIDI and use a piano for playback.
Now sing your part with the piano panned full to one side in your phones.
Now use auto tune to fix the few obvious pitch issues.
For me it seems to work best if the vocal track is loud and has absolutely no other sounds that have leaked into it. Careful with headphone bleed.
I use all the default settings and tenor voice and chromatic scale.
If you hear a glitch it is best to re record that phrase and copy paste into the track.

Thank you all for helping.  The key was to set the Auto-Tune to "configure as DXi instrument" in the Properties section.

Let's hope I sound in tune now!

Another option, and I know this is a radical concept in today's "fix it in the mix" world , is to take some singing lessons, do some ear training and practice, practice, practice.
