I won't see daylight- Blues - UPDATED Tueday PM
https://soundcloud.com/john-vere/i-wont-see-daylight UPDATED Tuesday PM April 2014 original I have a rag tag collection of styles and this weekend I thought I'd dig through my Blues material and see what's up. I opened a few old projects that I guess I'd wandered off and forgot about. This one was mostly done and just needed a little more drum work as it was just a straight pattern via TTS-1. So I played a new snare part using Strike2. And didn't really do much else. I posted 5 songs that are close to finished and I'm sitting here listening on the office computer through my old Tannoy's making notes. This one I'm thinking needs some warmth somehow, it's a little brittle? Mid-rangy ??

Nice track Johnny and could clearly hear all the instrumentation.....yeah, very mid rangy and could really use some low end to boost the bottom.

Thanks Mesh, Ya I'm just about to head upstairs and go at it again and that on my list for this batch of songs. Out of the batch I like the overall sound on this one https://soundcloud.com/john-vere/talkin-bout-my-baby-1 so I'll use it as a guideline to get the others up to snuff:

Is that a guitar playing monkey in the SoundCloud pic? I like monkeys :) This is really cool. I couldn't get to listen on decent speakers but it sounded pretty good to me. The only thing that jumped out a bit was the ride cymbal. Maybe add some bgvs?

I think this is really good as is. Levels all seem good -- i am not listening on the best speakers so can't really add much on the EQ. Small idea: maybe a little slapback reverb on the vocals? Kind of seems like that would be appropriate for the style of music.

Ha ha, That's funny, I have delay on the vocals and backed it way off 'cuase I thought it was a bit cheesy. I'll meet you all half way :) Thanks for comments and listening. Daryl. I'll re visit the ride but I want it up front for this song. Might be the tone doesn't translate to cheaper speakers which can happen with cymbals so I'll proof it on a laptop. Back ground vocals are forthcoming. I have a former bandmate, female vocalist who will hopefully help out. I want to offer that I'll record a few songs for her in trade for vocals.

Johnny, I'm listening on KRK Rokit 8's, and I think you're just a tad off on an otherwise good mix. Maybe all you need is to add a few db's of 300-400 hz on the bass guitar, and pump up the bass drum, which I could barely hear. Other than that, I just want to say that I enjoy both songs, and "I Won't See Daylight" is well worth the extra effort.

I think mix is good, I could hear all the instruments clearly but I think it's lacking some tonal energy on the bottom.

OK folks I spent a few hours on it. I soloed the bass track and it was a terrible recording, I think it was one I used my Hondo bass on. So here's a forum Challenge for you all: I am going to see if anyone here can identify the brand of bass I now used! Anyhow I think you'll be happy with that improvement alone, it filled things out. I re directed the Kick drum from Strike2 to TTS-1. Don't laugh, I think it's the perfect kick sometimes. Also it lets me add a bit of reverb to the whole drum kit. So working on the mid rangy thing, I swapped out Mr Tramp for a cleaner Elec Piano using Lounge Lizard. Still not happy, I recorded a whole new regular piano part as I could "hear" something I wanted on the choruses. That also added some brightness to the soundscape. I've added a BU vocal but I don't really like doing my own so this was just an experiment.

I like it. You answered my two suggestions. I don't know what kind of bass you're playing, but it sounds like my Fender running through Guitar Rig 5.

OK no takers on the bass? Its my new ( to me) favorite Sonar trick. I took the crappy sounding bass track and dropped it on a midi track. The sound is good 'ol SI bass. I was going to re play the part on my Yamaha bass and Fender Rumble system,, but it was well played to begin with so I figured what the hey. It worked. It takes a little editing but in the end it results in a better bass track. You get the best of both worlds. The feel and articulation of a real bass, and the ability to quantize and move a few notes that creates interesting patterns. And all those string Buzzes and pops are gone too.

Very cool. Melodyne is clever stuff.

Never heard the original, but this is good. I would probably add a bit of bottom to the lick, not much, but it is a little light there. Other than that, I think it is pretty good as it is. Regards, Dan

Thanks Dan, But I'm not clear on what your saying about the low end? The lik is played on 2 guitars one low and one high, Then the bass is played in the bottom range too. Myself I can hear each of those parts so it seems well covered frequency wise. But if you think it lacks low end overall I'll look into that. This is why I post here the feedback from this gang is important to me. So cool to have others listen on different systems be that a crappy laptop or proper studio monitors. At home I dump the songs to a USB stick and go play them in the office which has my old Tannoy 6.5's and in the front room which has a sub and a pair of Missions. My studio system has the NMS 10's and a set of small 4" speakers on B channel of my integrated amp. If you can make a mix sound good on those little things your 99% there. Tonight I will burn a CD to play in the car I have about 6 songs that are very close to done. I started a new song last night so I get side tracked from the mixing process easily.

Ah, Good one I'll fatten it up- if anyone here knows their stuff it's you Dan!! Your production on that song you just posted makes mine sound like a wet noodle. Well actually most of my songs start out as noodles on the guitar :) This one included. Thanks ever so much for listening everyone. Tonight I'll post another song.

Really like it! The performances are all very solid. Mix-wise, I'm hearing the vocals buried by the snare and that higher pitched guitar. Are your guitars playing at the same volume throughout the entire song? If so, you might drop their volume a db or so while the vocals are doing their thing. Just a little something to bring that vocal out front more? It's a catchy tune fer sure. cheers, -Tom

Tom thanks for your input and your comments had me return to the studio and see about those suggestions. There was volume envelopes on the guitar parts, So I soloed the track to see which one was which and right away I was hearing----MISTAKES!!. This is what happens if you start recording a song and walk away from it for a few months. You forget where you left off, Obviously that was a scratch guitar part...It's amazing that I never soloed the track, The mistakes were very minor but I'm picky about stuff like that. You don't hear it in the mix but it's there! So I replayed it and brought the guitar down, Listening right now I think I went too far and I don't like the Panning so I'm not done yet, but I re posted the latest mix for further comment. As for Dans suggestion I swapped out the Kick to the Strike2 kit and I lowered the snare volume a tad. Now Without the loud guitars I was hearing the Lounge Lizard piano part and changed that to a different patch that I like better now, That is the Phased sound you hear in the background.

OK I think I'm done with this one, I'm happy overall with the song and I thank everyone who commented which without the song would not have progressed the way it did. A big thank you to all. Last night I unmuted the original high guitar track and ran through it removing any parts I didn't like. So now there's sort of 2 high guitar parts that interplay and I like whats happened with that. I've pushed up the bottom end a bit and a few very small adjustments to effects. I also turned down the guitars overall to bring out the vocals.
