I agree that side chaining certainly is useful. Yes you could automate the delay, as you could just about any other use for side chaining but as far as I'm concerned that's much more work.

Remember you've only got to set the whole lot up once and then save it as a track template, then it's ready to insert into any project. The biggest problem I have is keeping all my track templates organised so I can find them quickly.

One thing about sidechaining kik and bass (where the kik ducks the bass) that I can't figure out, is how to hear the ducked bass when soloed.

Is there a simple solution?

so there are a few ways to side chain
when side chaining a delay on a vocal
would you put the comp on its own track
or under the delay in the buss.
and why not use that comp with  the side chain switch on prochannel
or are the sonitus fx giving better result for you sidechain folks

Ive been using LFO Tool for the past few weeks...

Saves alot of hassle in side chaining things, can be automated too! just stick it on the track and away you go, best £20 Ive spent this year :-)

One way.

Remove the send to the bass sidechain in, clone the kick track set it's output to the sidechain.  Use that as the 'key', solo both this 'key' kick track and the bass when you want to hear the ducked bass.

Like I said previously for the 'key' track it's role is merely to control the compressor you don't even need to be able to hear it.

It is often the case a even a completely different 'key' sound will be used just to drive the comp as distinct to the actual one you are hearing in the final mix.  On this key track provided the performance is the same one you can treat it to extremes just to get the compressor to behave the way you want.  So for example on a vocal track say, on your cloned key track you can use big cuts to stop the comp being triggered by a whole frequency range.

Provided you solo both the key and the ducked track you'll be able to hear the consequnces of any adjustments knowing the 'actual' perfomance you want to be heard stays completely unaffected.
