I'm a little cranky

I went to the dentist this afternoon for a root canal. I know.

The receptionist cheerfully asks how I am. I reply that it's cold and rainy outside, my tooth hurts and I am spending my afternoon at the dentist's having a root canal, how do you think I am?

She points out that she has to go to the dentist's office every stinkin' day, so there will be no sympathy there! OK, fair enough.

Two shots into the cheek. Does it hurt when I do this? YES. One more shot. How about now? MMPH. That means YES, DAMMIT but my tongue no longer works. A third shot should do the trick. Does it hurt now? MMPHKUSHOL. Better give him two more. I can now no longer feel the left side of my face. This must be what a stroke feels like.

Dentist: ooh. hmm, aah. Assistant: ooh, hmm, aah. I have no idea if they're commenting on my cavity or remembering lunch. Finally the dentist says he can save the tooth - but. But it will eventually have to come out and I will have paid a lot of money for nothing. He seems uncomfortable telling me this, as if he were announcing I had only 6 months to live. He is relieved when I suggest perhaps the tooth should just be pulled. Hey, it's one of those way in the back that I never use anyway.

The assistant asks if I am nervous. I ask her if they would give me Valium if I said I was. She said yes they would, but it was too late now. Note that for next time.

Now here I sit with a rolled-up piece of gauze in my mouth to soak up the blood. The lanocain is wearing off and the pain is setting in. I am hungry but cannot eat. My chin itches but I feel nothing when I scratch it. I didn't ask but I'm pretty sure the instructions not to smoke for 24 hours includes medicinal herbs. I am feeling a little cranky.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

That's never fun..... but I think you made the right choice... no need to do that twice and pay all that money for nothing in the end.

Look at the bright side.....With all the money you saved, you can buy some new gear.

I hope you're pain and crankiness doesn't last long.  One thing that they allowed me to have after dental work was a milk shake.  Not the same as medicinal herb, but it did help.

    Good luck, Bit,

Or grind it up, make some tea and drink it.
Then again by time you wake and read this you'll be fine to smoke anyway.
It's only until it heals a little so you don't get 'dry socket' which I hear hurts like a SOB.
It's the sucking action that causes this, I'm kinda surprised that they would even let you suck milkshake through a straw. My dentist even warns against this.

    Feel better.

Sympathies Bit not long had a root canal myself.  The tea suggestion sounds a good way round the problem as long as it is not too hot.

Oh and yes dry socket hurts far worse than you can imagine.  Something I have to face when I have teeth pulled apparently I do not bleed much consequent dry socket.

Never go to a dentist unarmed.  If he/she understands that the life they save by minimizing pain may be their own, they're more motivated to ease your suffering.

A warning shot at the hygenist is perfectly acceptable.  They may bill your insurance for damages, however, so make sure that such things are covered prior to your visit.

    Hope you feel better soon.

Did they say what would happen if you smoked? Is your head going to explode if you did? Is your head going to explode if you don't? Just soberly weigh the pros and cons of various explosions and proceed from there. With any luck it will be away from the direction of sobriety.

I tried to soldier through the pain but eventually dropped a Percoset. I don't like that stuff but at least it doesn't give me a stomach ache like Vicodin does. I slept for 11 hours straight, woke up in a fuzzy haze, but then remembered that my Kontakt 4 upgrade is supposed to arrive today and that cheered me up.

LOL, reminds me of the Cheers episode where Carla goes to the dentist.
She grabs hold of his pearl sack. The dentist says, "what are you doing?" Carla says, "We're not going to hurt each other now are we?" lol

The no smoking is because "nicotine" inhibits blood clotting, There's nothing in "THC" that will cause the same EFX.  My wife works at the dentist and confirms this as an 100% fact. She would have talked you into saving the tooth and explained the benefits. You should have a partial denture made otherwise the tooth above will become lonesome for it's chewing partner. The teeth beside the hole will become lazy and fall over and you will end up looking like one of the coffee house regulars avatar.
