I'm giving up
singing. in favor of producing! I'm seeing the big reaction to my latest track which is a collar with a good friend of mine, and it seems that he's a one-hit wonder! None of my own tracks have even had such success so far! I have to admit that besides my non-expressive voice (frequently called 'nasally'), I think I just care less about writing GOOD lyrics and care more about really doing nice arrangements and producing tracks well!! Whatchya thinking?

Mebee he meant collaboration? I personally wouldn't give up just because he's a better singer or "one hit wonder" than you.......there's always someone out there that's better. What you can do is keep practicing to give yourself a chance to improve.......where YOU can be happier with your performance. The voice is probably the easiest "instrument" to practice on as you can do that anywhere, and the more you practice, the better you'll get. You're probably not at the point where you'd like to be, but that can change easily.....with a little bit of work/effort put into to it. BTW, I don't sing (in public).......but if I did, I better damn well sing in key!!

Why give up singing? You can do that as well if you want. If I had a voice that could get anywhere close to 'in key' I'd use it.

I'm thinking that you're casting pearls before swine, and they wouldn't know what is right or wrong anyway, and you need to stp doing material that is crap, and stick to things that mean something to you! You can't "quit" on yourself! You just have to find your own moment in time, so you know what to do and how to do it. Next you gonna tell me that Willie Nelson can sing! Keep writing and singing(I wish I could sing) even if you give a priority to producing. You never know what you'll come up with good--or at least something you enjoy listening to. Just put pressure on yourself that it has to be a hit.

Right. Robomusic (another member here, who hasn't been heard from in awhile) swears by it. He said it removes the schmutz from his nose and allows him to sing better. But you'll never catch me pouring water in my nose. There's only so much that water can do to fix my voice.

I think it takes years of practice to kind of find your voice and what works for you. The old timers went out on the road and honed their chops, so to speak. For some it just comes naturally too, for others including myself, it takes years of practice and figuring out what works for you.

I don't like to suggest some different voices and singers to many folks, because it tends to confuse things some. But there are some singer/poets out there that know how to use "words" really well, and it is their "only secret" in their longevity, and the work they do. As such, I would imagine that learning how to word your words is more important than "singing", per se, which is what someone like Bob Dylan does. It's up to Manfred Mann and Jimi and others to make him come off way better, even in instrumentation! In general, Peter Hammill, is a very good test, since he screams, cries, shouts and words his way around music that seems to be simply a background to what he is saying or doing. If you catch his middle period (Silent Corner Empty Stage/Godbluff/Still Life). you will find that material insane, and how the heck will anyone ever "sing" that? It has less to do with singing, than it does with how he feels. Another voice that is very distinctive, and totally improvised at times and incredibly strong and opinionated, is Roy Harper, and his middle period (70's and 80's) is magnificent, but not something that anyone can sit, through, and enjoy a whole lot, specially as his lyrics are VERY pointed, and not of the Bapu persuasion at all! Somehow, if you can not find your singing voice, maybe it is time that you stop "singing" and start just expressing yourself. If things mean enough to you, you don't need to add notes under it so it comes off like you are singing something, because it would sound un-natural and not clean and even less clear, as the music might suggest/add something else to the whole atmosphere that does not fit the "mood", but it added notes for you to rest on. In theater, we tend to say, go outside at 5AM, in the middle of nowhere and shout your feelings, and let it out. In time, you will find the expression, that you want and how you want to say it, and how it means more to you, than having to use a C on this word and a D on another word, when that part is way less important than your feeling perception behind the word. Good luck. These things are not fun, but a good teacher that can help you with your words, would be far better than anyone talking music to you at this point, is how I see it. I just hate to see good talents, trying so hard, and still feeling empty and frustrated. That often means they are working with the wrong folks, but that is not for me to say or believe.
As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

I think you got some positive feedback...usually whenever I've made a similar statement, it was like...Hey don't let the door hit you on the a** on the way out. If I was truly in it for anyone else I would have quit long ago. If you decide to quit, sadly , the world won't notice. I think we have a great bunch of people here to egg you onto excellence which isn't usually the norm. The only two replies are either , well go ahead and quit, you must not have had a heart for it anyways.....or, oh please don't quit. If you need that prop you probably shouldn't be in it either. You must want to do it without any outside coercion good or bad. Soundclick is loaded with millions, Soundcloud probably more so. The cards are stacked. If you drop today there are a thousand coming online with new music. People aren't spending as much money on music...if you still enter knowing all of that, then you must really want to do it for you.

You guys are right. Guess I'm much better off making my mark and staking my claim than just being 'gone'... Plus I guess Ive slipped slowly but surely into NOT doing this for myself, but apparently doing this with the intention of making 'hits' and getting a fan following when that's NOT what this should be: I should be just expressing myself, just writing good music. I guess I was fed up with no one saying anything about my voice (or only saying things that make it sound undesirable). I'mma do whatever comes out of me.
