I'm not giving up
People have told me I cannot sing. People on this forum (songs forum) have told me I cannot sing. I've been "fired" from 2 different volunteer positions because the leader did not like my singing. Since then I've taken voice lessons and I've studied under 2 new leaders with their help to improve and I've "worked the circuit" so to speak by finding a place that would allow me to sing every week. I will NOT give up. NO man will tell me what I can and cannot do. I sing MUCH better than Dylan ever did! I will continue to improve and learn...

Aww Reece, I'm sorry to hear that. While I will admit that I am NOT one of the ones that has ever thought you weren't a good singer, I will say that I feel you're in the same position as me as a singer. Meaning....our voices just don't fit on certain material no matter how in key, how good, or dynamic we are. I wouldn't take it personal.....I've not taken it personal when people have commented on my voice not being right for rock or metal. We do what we do....sometimes what we have to offer isn't for everyone. Then again, I don't play music "for everyone". I do it because I love it and HAVE met quite a few people that enjoy what I do. That's how you have to look at it. We're stuck with what we're stuck with. If you CAN make an improvement, by all means you have to try. But if you're content with how you sound, how you play or how you present yourself, always consider the sources brother. There are a lot of jealous people out there that can't sing, play or even record with any kind of fair production. Yet, they sure can run their mouths and hurt others in less than 5 seconds while they have not offered anything worth anything in the scheme of things. It takes a lot for someone to put themselves out there as a singer or to even share music. Unfortunately you're at risk to the Pistol Pete's out there as well as some people you may consider friends until you hear they may have taken shots at you. That's been the story of my life brother. Someone attempting to bash me at every curve. I know I'm not the best at anything. I have never tried to be other than to "better" what my personal best was on the last attempt. For what it's worth, you obliterate Dylan as a singer. :) The problem with that is...most of us can obliterate him...we just can't out-write the baystid! :) Hang in there my friend and keep at it. -Danny

Daffy duck has never talked very well and is loved by people. I'm thinking that knowing "how" to sing is just not as important as having "character" combined with good music/lyrics...and that I probably understood Daffy as well as Dylan.

When I grew up, I had sort of a gift for singing. Year after year, I was inevitably picked to sing the lead among all the school's students. Then, when I was in 5th grade, during the school's Christmas celebration, as I was doing my bit in front of the choir, my voice broke in front of all the other kids and their parents. One of the most humiliating moments in my life. Anyway, I eventually managed to re-gain control over that new, lower voice of mine. Whichever band I played in, I ended up handling the vocal duties as well, even if I auditioned for guitar. I never liked my voice that much, but it worked I guess. I should have put effort into it and master it, but I just showed up and sang when needed. Then one day, I quit smoking... And I never managed to sing again since - even when I relapsed and started smoking again. It's incredibly embarrassing and disheartening not to be able to do something which has come so naturally for practically 30 years of your life, to put that much effort into it and not to see the results. I don't know whether I gave up or not. Every few months, I give it a try, do breathing exercises, a few warm ups (things I never ever did before) and try to sing. So far, nothing good has come out of it. I mean nothing. But at least, I do have access to a singer. :P

Specifically responding to Danny and Rain: this thread was partially done in jest as a spin on the thread "I am giving up" by david saying he was giving up singing. but everything I wrote is true, I have been told numerous times in the forum and by others in person that I cannot sing. it wasn't even Pistol Pete, but another "colorful character" who dons the songs forum. Since the time I was "fired" from the voluntary singing gig the 2nd time (by a different leader than the first time), I decided it was time to figure out what was wrong, so I took 3 years (6 semesters) worth of private voice lessons. that was since I started posting songs here in the songs forum, too. my voice lessons were from about 2009 to 2011. after that I joined a church where the leader gave me the opportunity to learn to ad lib harmony parts every week. after about a year and a half of that, I joined the church I'm at now where I sing on praise team on a rotation every 3 weeks, but I'm also allowed to lead the service every other Wednesday night and the Sunday service whenever the staff leader is out. The problem wasn't that these people were wrong - it's that they were right and that I needed to learn how to sing. I sang in my throat and I was off pitch often. I've learned to control that mostly, but I'm still learning every day I sing! the point however, is that listening to others tell me that I can't sing did not deter me from singing, it made me more determined to do it! it made me seek help and learn from those who knew I had potential and helped bring it out of me. I"m not saying I"m "there" - I'm sure there are still a few people who will still say I can't sing. that's OK. I"m still learning and they will not deter me. they are the wind beneath my wings!

As far as I'm concerned, that the best attitude. There's very little merit in only doing the stuff that comes easy. It can be hard on one's ego, but the only way to progress is to lower the shields, to expose the weaknesses and to work on them. I've spent a whole part of my life avoiding stuff I sucked at - thanks to my dad who instilled in me the notion that you had to be good at something w/o trying and practicing. Naturally strong, naturally fit, naturally able to drink 36 beers and walk a straight line... Sucking meant being in a position of inferiority, which was unacceptable. What a way to live... Anyway, I've since learned better. Personally, I tell myself go on and sing your heart out or try to play that Malmsteen lick which is totally out of your comfort zone - as long as, until you get it right, no else suffers from it, it's all good. ;)
