It's a hyped-up sugar-water mixture. Almost 3:1 instead of the usual 4:1. It lowers the freezing point plus the bubble wrap and the hand warmers (inside of pouches attached to the bases) helps.
I guess it acts like anti-freeze for them! My downstairs feeder didn't have any bubble wrap or hand warmers and it took less than two hours to almost entirely freeze. I had to bring it inside, let it melt and I FINALLY found some extra bubble wrap. I hope it stays OK - we're supposed to get even colder later tonight and tomorrow (I've seen forecasts for 10 degrees F!).

I get four types of hummingbirds up here during summer and three of them are supposed to migrate (Rufous, Calliope and Black Chin) however some like the little Black Chin in the pics below (who considers himself King of the downstairs feeder), will stick around. The main type that are here every month are the Anna's.   Oh yeah, and I saw (and definitely heard) two large flocks of snow geese flying overhead last night. HONK! HONK! HONK! HONK! lol.

Good thing I'm not there. Birds have this tendency to like to eat off my hands!
I don't mind feeding them either!

That's amazing, Craig. I've never seen Hummingbirds congregate like that.
They always seem so solitary. Even seeing two or three at one time is unusual.
