IAM - Smooth Jazz instrumental original

I bring you my latest. This one was inspired by my Late friend Jimmy Gentry. I've been so busy at work that this one has been a while in the process, but I think it's just about there.

Yes... I agree, it's almost there. I like the chords and it's mello.  The issue I heard was drums out of sync at the beginning.   After it gets rolling it's really nice.... that fly was pesky. I would smack it.

fix the nits and you have a nice tribute tune to Jimmy.

Very Chicago, which is a good thing. But the timing of those drums is off? Is this qantized? Baptized? Labamotized? It really stands out in a few places, others though it sounds great! I love Chicago man :-) Are you optimistic? About the way that things are goin?

    There's a stinker right there at 2:45.

Nice one James! I would'nt even begin to know how to mix or play something like this!! Love all the horns and chord changes. I have'nt listened to any jazz cd's in years I'm afraid Drums have been mentioned and maybe a bit more seperation on the horns (or space out the playing a little more with the notes) as there were a couple of moments it sounded a bit crowded. You really have a good knack for composing this style!! Still, a nice, smooth piece and I enjoyed hearing it!

Hi James, nice tune you seem to have all the elements covered. Not to crazy about the mix, would love to hear more of that acoustic lead maybe trading some licks with the sax, imho.

    Hi, James,

This is really nice, I'm sure that Jimmy's smiling somewhere listening to this!

I agree with Robby about the great 70's Chicago vibe that the horns bring to this, and I think Larry may be onto something after he mentioned spreading the horns out a little wider in the mix.

Great writing, excellent playing and nice synth work, have a good one, buddy!

I'm guessing we could fill the first page here with tributes to Jimmy.  (I've got one I still want to sing if I can wrestle my voice into submission).  Anyway, once again, jazz isn't my thing, but I quite enjoyed this.

Pretty cool tune. I didn't think the drums were out of sync so much as they were creating a nice syncopation by accenting the upbeats. I've heard plenty of jazz drummers do something similar. Jazz drummers do weird stuff. I heard a drummer play Mary Had a Little Lamb on his snare once. Not the rhythm... the melody. Nice arrangement. Horns sounded great except where they sounded a bit sharp at 2:45-2:46.

Thanks all for listening and commenting. I've been so busy at work, I haven't had a chance to even post in a while.

This one came together nicely in my head, but was a beast to try to record. In fact once I completed this project, I ended up starting over again.

As many noted,  I'm not much of a drummer and in this song the drums were recorded entirely from my controller on the fly. ( No loops etc ). I did some minor edits to get rid of the really bad notes, but it looks like I need to take a better approach.

Herb - Thanks for taking the time to listen. In future, I'll try to limit the frills to instruments and try to find a better approach to getting the timings better.

Robbie -  I never had any intention of going for a Chicago like sound, it just kind of came out that way I guess.  I'm optimistic that someday I'll get the knack of this stuff. I'm getting better at it but I really wish I had the skill to be able to do this with my limited time budget.

Larry, Frank, Thepogue, Bob, Chappel  and Janet- Thanks for listening and all the moral support.

Rik - You are probably right about spreading out the sax and horn. I usually get flagged for spreading things too wide. I guess I over compensated, but I did want them to blend. Perhaps if I added another wind or brass it would spread better.

I still hear some timing anomalies that need to be touched up... I know how that can be though, especially on a multi-player project, it can just seem to happen. Timing is very important though? 1. 2. 3. 4? Very important...
