IP Address - Can I remain completely anonymous/untraceable on the web?
Say I wanted to join another forum for example. I want to be contactable by email (obviously not using my name or usual email address), but other than that I want to be completely anonymous and untraceable. Does anyone know how much information my IP Address gives others about my location/internet provider etc?

yes you can be anonymous but it is more and more more complicated. In most cases it's enough to use a proxy server (many are free) with 1 or more hops, otherwise they can hunt you down, pull out of your apartment and bury on the dessert...

When you really want to be sure nobody can trace you down never do it from your home. Use public or somebody else internet connection, internet cafe etc. Also use clean computer without any private information saved in your cookies or other files, clean browsing history, emails etc. and even better use public or somebody else computer in library for instance. When you are done destroy it.

It might depend on if you use certain words, but anymore I think all e-mail is being looked at. Not sure though as I don't use e-mails that much, and I think forums are monitored and about everything anymore. It don't bother me that much. People can trace a connection and find the IP but after that I am not sure (unless you are a govmint that is authorized) if anyone else can know anything more after the IP address. And only maniacs in a sense of that would want to read it all except who I mentioned.

As with all things internet related if you are concerned about a site... do not visit that site. You can know all you can about intarweb security and there will always be someone who knows something you don't. I find the places that are the most useful to me that exhibit proper admin practices and reasonable TOS/privacy statements and stick to those. It's also good to remain cordial, polite and helpful when actually posting somewhere. A good rule of thumb is... would you say that in real life? If not, don't type it. Just my thoughts on the matter.

Yes, your IP says everything about you. For example, yours says you have a soft spot for punk rock and decent beer.

I can understand that some people have their dirty little secrets that they are ashamed of and would rather other people didn't know about, but these are enlightened times and going on the the Leeds United fan forum no longer holds the same stigma it once did. It's only mildly repugnant these days, so post away from the comfort of your own home and fret ye not. It's not like any non-deviants will be looking anyway ;) PS. You might wanna have a few dodgy porn sites open in your browser to quickly flick across to in case the lady of the house comes in. Wouldn't want her to catch you looking at that Leeds stuff !

I don't know about the Leeds forum, but one of the vilest places I've ever had the misfortune to visit is the General Chat section of Not606 (which was created after the fallout from the BBC dropping the original 606) No subject is taboo to these "people"

In normal circumstances an IP address will only trace you back to your service provider, some ISP's even use dynamic IP addresses which change everytime you reset your router. You'd have to have done something wrong for your ISP to give your usage information to anyone else, but it does happen for example if the police want to trace somebody on the internet the ISP will in certain circumstances provide them with details of who was on a particular IP address at a particular time. You can spoof your IP address using various methods but there is always a route to be found that leads back to your keyboard eventually. Most privacy defaults to the fact that unless you are up to something really sinister nobody is particularly going to be that interested in what you get up to when there are several billion others out there that nobody takes any notice of either. If I think or get a feeling that anything I might do on-line is going to come back and bite me in some way it's normally a good cue for me not to go there.
