Yea i built it But the floppy cable doesn't have the little bump like the IDE cables do!

I'm using Kingston RAM.. I know not to cheap out on RAM. I just ordered (yesterday) a stick of 512 PC2700 from Elixer.

BTW, when I run the memtest prog, it boots, but sticks at one screen of a long list of letter/number lines, and I have to restart it.. it stays there for hours.

Thanks

I just bult a new DAW from scratch and have the same errors. Tried clean install with xp sp1 and xp sp2. No difference.
Note: It only happens when sonar is running. This has corrupted a few project files that i had to retrieve from DVD backup.

I do have a new USB keyboard and mouse. Found an artile about moving the memory from slot 1 and 2 (per instructions in the asus motherboard book) to slots 1 and 3. (was getting a BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER). Thought it helped but then came back.

I have all the latest drivers for the Motu 424 and all hardware. Even tried original drivers. Still same thing.
I have tried moving the PCI424 card to different slots, no difference.

I have 2 512 sticks of Ultra memory. This could be causing issues but havent tried removing one stick. (will do that later)

Any more ideas or insight will be greatly appreciated as I'm tracking vocals and loosing $$ at this point :-)
I just dont trust the machine at this point.

thx

Thanks, Al. I see that people have recommended & used memtest86 to resolve BSODs over there too!

Edit: I've bookmarked the site. Could be handy to point folks to. Saves a lot of typing!

I got my first BSOD 2 days ago also.. it was also the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error message. S4PE 4.01. I had dowloaded but not yet installed the XP service pack 2. That was the ONLY change I had made on my PC.

Once you (all of you with BSODs) have an AMD/Pentium-approved PSU in place, and you have your power and floppy cables plugged in the right way (assuming you haven't plugged/unplugged anything while the power is on), installed your latest drivers without IRQ and/or resource conflicts, it's time for
Memtest86.

melaodejander-

I looked at that article, which suggested that I may need to replace my power supply. I'm currently running a 400 watt psu. I assume that that should be efficient, but I'm not really sure?

But at this point I'm willing to try just about anything

That's fairly beefy. Unless something's just plain wrong with the unit (which is uusally more catastrophic than just a BSOD a day), then that's not your problem.

If you want to test your power supply, get a multimeter and read the rails with the supply under load. You should look for under voltage readings and "sags" on the rails and the presence of excessive AC ripple (should be under 1% on the rails: 50 millivolts on the +5 rail, for example).

How can I get the 1010 on its own IRQ?? I've tried every PCI slot, and have disabled onboard USB and LAN. However, it still seems to always be sharing an IRQ with 2-3 other devices! I'd hate to have to deal with FOUR 1010s in one pc!!

That can be a real challenge sometimes. Are you on Win2K or WinXP? Sometimes, Win2K users have no recourse but to switch off of ACPI to Standard PC mode. XP with ACPI usually does a better job spreading devices across available IRQ's, especially if the MOBO has an APIC to provide the higher IRQs.

Regardless, you could benefit from looking up the PCI IRQ Table for your MOBO. It's usually listed in the PCI section of your MOBO manual.

RE: IRQ Problems.. I think... BSOD!! 2004/11/14 06:12:56 (permalink)
Hi all

i also had these problems until i upgraded my PSU about a 10 days ago, since then my system has been stable (going from crashing every few minutes to not crashing for ten days) until last night when i had another. The only common denominater in all this is Sonar 4, these problems never happen in any other software audio or other wise. Over a year ago i moved from Sonar 2.2 to Nuendo 2 and have recently come back to Sonar 4. I never get this crashing in Nuendo only Sonar. Of course last nights crash could be related to something else.

I really want Sonar to work (as we all do) as i'm considering replacing my current sound cards with the Tascam FW 1884 control surface and Nuendo doesn't have native support for this unit.

I think in my case the root is some where in my audio cards or drivers (ageing Yamaha DSP Factory & SW1000K). I can get Sonar to BSOD on demand if i try and change the latency setting in the Yamaha ASIO control panel. Again this doesn't occur when trying the same thing in Nuendo.

No overclocking here by the way

Matt

Well, I'm not having now a BSO but, instead, I hit play, then stop, then click on some other part of the track view (in the arrangement zone), hit play again fast and Sonar crashes. This is what it says (english translation):

SONARPDR.EXE has detected a problem and has to be closed.

blabla. For more info, click here.
>>> Other window, after clicking >>>
Error signature
AppName: sonarpdr.exe AppVer: 13.0.0.184 ModName: sonarpdr.exe
ModVer: 13.0.0.184 Offset 0050b5b1

For more technical info ... blabla
Close

Then, after closing this two windows anoter opens saying:

{win title} Sonar 4 Producer Edition - {blabla.cwp - Track]: SONARPDR.EXE - Application error
Instruction in "0x0b29304c" references the memory in "0x0bb786bc". Memory can not be "read"
Clic in ok to end this program.

And then 3 more windows with te same, but changing only the "0x0b29304c" and "0x0bb786bc".

After that a windows with title "Error" and the following:
Run time error 216 at 0B52902C

OK GUYS,

"IRQ not less than or equal to" is a fairly common BSOD.

however it generally leans toward the first 2 things.

1) RAM it is often a memory issue, reseating can sometimes help.
mis-matched stick can cuase this. bad ram addresses can cause this.
etc. 90% of the time its this.

2) third party software. this means anything other than windoz,
however it can also mean a bad install of windows or corrupt install.
SP2 is a good one for this. often comes from a new plug-in/sample that for some reason dont like whats installed.

3) Bad drivers while not too common it can throw this error

4) Power supply, a bad power supply can have you chasing your tail for ever.

5) looking on Microshafts website "knowledge base" can give you answers sometimes. although hard to search

Well, in one instance in which I had "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR _EQUAL" , switching drivers fixed it, and in the other, I have it from reliable sources that it's the app (not Sonar--VSampler standalone) being picky.

Just an update...
I removed one of the Ultra 512 memory sticks. After rebooting, the pc immediatly blue screened. Put the other one in instead and all has been fine except for one instance.

Tiger direct was cool and is sending Mushkin matched memory.

Good call on the memory.....

An application CANNOT itself cause a BSOD. Tha application may be asking the driver to do something stupid, but it's the DRIVER which is causing the BSOD.

For example, with an early Creative SB Live driver, you could get a BSOD in Pro Audio 9 by setting a loop of zero length (i.e. start/end points at the same place). This resulted in the SB Live driver being asked to play a zero length buffer - which promptly caused the BSOD...

Losguy,

Thanks for directing us to MemTest86. Really, you should put together a troubleshooting/tweaking handbook for Sonar users. You've provided some information in these forums that every PC-DAW user should have!

I've been getting the IRQL BSOG intermittently for a months during Sonar projects, but I just assumed (not knowing enough about PCs) that is was an IRQ-sharing issue--leading me to a time-consuming wild goose chase messing with IRQs and PCI slots. I now get the BSOG after about a 20-minute Sonar session, and the crash messes up my settings on my MOTU 896, as well.

It could have been a RAM issue after all! I have 2 GB of RAM in 4 modules. MemTest86 revealed 6 errors in 4 passes at one RAM address. I switched the modules around, and got more errors at a different address. Thiking it was about to determine which module was the problem, the third permutation of arranging modules led to--no errors after 13 hours of testing!

The verdict is still out--I have to have a long Sonar session to see what happens, but its weird that just getting the right arrangement of modules can clean up those MemTest errors! (Why is that?)

And it still could be my MOTU 896 drivers, which have always acted a bit unpredictably. I'm soon to switch soundcards, anyway.

I keep getting prodded to do this, and maybe it's not a bad idea. Maybe I'll do it when I have long stretches of copious spare time... (or how about if a publisher fronts me for the book deal!)

Depends on the specific MOBO. It has a lot to do with the board design, such as the trace lengths among the Address/Data lines between the memory controller and the RAM slots, and the memory system hardware, like the high-frequency characteristics of the interface between the memory controller and the data/address lines. That, coupled with the timing characteristics of the RAM sticks, which vary from stick to stick (some more than others, and generally least with "dual" stick kits).

Glad you found a "lucky" permutation. You can also increase your chances of success by taming down your memory timings, if your BIOS allows it. But generally, I've found the rate of BSOD occurrence to be drastically reduced by establishing success with Memtest.

Use Google's Advanced Search to find pages at www.microsoft.com. Sometimes when you search from M$'s own site, a lot of the docs are hidden away (on purpose-- you know, another cash cow waiting to happen, yeah?). A Google search generally pulls those pages up, gratis.
