IRS letter..... scam?

I got this letter in my email today... It's a phishing scam.

I'm just wondering how many people will fall for this?

I don't know about you but as a business man, I get IRS notices from time to time.... they know how to spell, and they use the US postal service to deliver the bad news on IRS stationary, not email with zipped attachments. AND... they always ask for money... not identification.... they know who I am and where I am.... they only want the money.... in addition, there was nothing in this email to indicate that they know who they are dealing with on this end........

yeah, I'd say it's a scam.    Copied below for your entertainment.

I used BOLD on the spelling and just plain wrong statements.

I get plenty of Pfishing emails (primarily from Nigeria) stating there's millions of $$ that need to be transfered to the US (with a long story of some inheritence) requesting my bank info.
I've actually replied to some of them stating that my cousin (who works for Interpol) will personally come & pick it up from them, but they never replied to any of those emails and I'm still waiting to be a millionaire.

The creepiest one I've seen was a from a guy saying he'd been hired to kill you, but felt that you didn't deserve to die so he was asking for $ compensation NOT to execute the orders. Otherwise, or if you advised authorities, he'd just kill you. Not sure the idiot realizes the amount of trouble he is in if he is caught.

My Fiancée received that one. I'd like some one on one time with the poor idiot who sent that one - just to scare him a bit in return. ;)

The scams I keep getting are from some company saying they want money or I'll be kicked off my land! LOL

"Wells Fargo Home Mortgage ... where's our money?"

    Pfft. I ain't sendin' them a penny!

They even took the scam so far as to send a Sheriff to my house and he put pad locks on the doors, but I ain't fallin' for it!

When they tried sending those to me, I sent them back a change of address form.  Now, the Sheriff goes to my neighbor's house instead.

That's why I only open such emails when visiting someone else's office.  While they spend their time, frantically hitting keys and asking, "Where did all of this come from?", I keep myself busy evaluating the contents of their candy jars.

Being very polite, I'm quick to notice when their verbal ramblings begin to gravitate away from their virus crisis towards enquiring what I was doing in there in the first place, or whether or not I've left anything in their jar.  They usually don't have to ask me more than 3 or 4 times before I realize they're expecting an answer.  It's usually at that point that I leave the room.  I've found it's best to be seated at my desk, with few crumbs on my face, when an HR person comes to visit.

Yep, it's from Nigeria, or from a wanna-be Nigerian. Oprah even did a show on it a few years ago because so many people in the States fall for the stuff.

We in South Africa are so used to it, we spot it like a spare wheel on a boat - they try to scam you on any imaginable thing. Wait till you get told you're the long-lost heir of some gold baron! Or that someone was checking you out on the net and wants to start up a business with you...
It prays on people's weakness for freebees and money for nothing. Except, there are no cheques (or chicks) for free :O)

My advice is - stay away from ANYTHING that asks for personal details in email from. If they're serious, they'll call you.

Offers of free becan are real, though, right?  I mean, it's becan.  They wouldn't fool around with that, would they?  There's really a Nigerian Minister of Becan who needs my help, right?  Right?

What kind of a sick world do we live in where Faux-Nigerians attempt to cheat doe-eyed innocents with offers of Becan?  Ok, maybe not doe-eyed, but the principle is the same.  Ok, maybe more becan-crazed than innocent, but that's only normal.

I got the best combo of phishing e-mails. These guys were clever (spelling aside).

E-mail one is your standard Nigerian scam. We need you to get money out of our country for us...yada yada. I ignore it as usual.

About a week later I get an e-mail from "the FBI" quoting the above e-mail and indicating that the group from the first e-mail was a terrorist organization and that, based on my receipt of that e-mail, they have proof that I am an accomplace to terrorism.

They say I am being watched by the FBI and will end up in prison forever if I don't help them. They order me to accept the offer from the first e-mail as part of a sting operation. I will be able to keep the money and they won't torture me for my betrayal of "our beloved and sacred country of America to who we pledge our hearts." I suspect the FBI is usually less poetic.

Needless to say I handed over all of my personal information and am awaiting my Congressional Medal of Freedom -- Canadians can get that right? :)

Craig, that's easy enough to do.

you might want to look at www.419eater.com if you enjoy seeing the scamsters get what is coming to them.... it's a site were people "scam baiters" set up reverse scams that waste the time and money of the scammer.... pretty cool stuff that they are doing.

Some of the scam baiters are geniuses with the reverse scams that they are pulling off.

That site has some of the most entertaining reading I've run into anywhere.  The guy who actually conned a scammer into providing "the most amazing pictures" is an artist without compare.
