Ianira

Blimey! I'm on a roll tonight...

I wanted to have a mess with my guitar and Adaptiverb, so I knocked up a project with just two tracks.

Track 1 :  Guitar audio with G-R 5 in the effects bin and sends to delay, reverb and Adaptiverb (which I placed on a buss). So plenty of the prerequisite verb+echo stuff

Track 2 : The Drone Track. I used an instance of Korg's MS-20 and played a single very, very long note while automating the usual HPF and LPF filters to add some flavour to the drone. I then routed this into another instance of Adaptiverb (after freezing the MS-20 synth).

So, yeah, this is eleven minutes of self-indulgent noodling over a drone, and I'm not that great a guitar player I'm afraid. Gave me an excuse to get my PRS out of its flight case though, so that must be a positive.

If you said, "this is just the same as that Corona crap you did last year," I'd have to concede the point. However, I do think it is a bit of an improvement. The drone I used on Corona was pretty boring, even for a drone, whereas this time I think the drone is a bit more "interesting" (for a, erm... drone). And this time I have left more space between each phrase, and I think that works better.

I DI my guitar, so I know I won't get any prizes for guitar tone...

Okay, here it is:-

    Great Daryl, thanks for that

I'm a bit out of my depth when I start playing with proper instruments haha!

I had to tame the mids slightly, and because I can only monitor on headphones, and my hi-fi isn't exactly the best thing to check a mix on, I rolled off everything below 45Hz.

    Thanks for listening

Andy, nice deep ambient track. The kind you would play to simply drift away in thoughts or stay silent listening to it.
Drone is deep yet smooth and well mixed. Different guitar sound, kinda ethnic feel to it. Thanks for sharing...

OK, I'm in for the haul, here we go.

A little crackling at the beginning.

Expansive low drone, like planets moving through space.

So far it is like a musical interpretation of an NDE, just before stepping to the other side, calling, beckoning, the beauty that lies ahead.

    5 minutes in.

    I am inanimate.

My spirit expands and flows outward in all directions.

I begin to fall, like raindrops.
into an ocean, rippling outward unceasingly.

    7 minutes in

    I am absorbed
(a little digital distortion crackling @7:55 but I digress.)

    Swirling in a whirlpool
    Like a galaxy nearby.
    larger than life, extensive
    whoosh goes the weasel
    gently descending
    as the pillars rise
    and fade out
    into the silent oblivion.

I thank you for that ride
I was getting into it so much, that it seemed like it ended to soon
    but I am refreshed
    you could say reborn

    That was cool

    I need a break

Wow! Jesse, I have read you comments through a few times now. In fact I am going to save those words in a text file and put them in the project folder for this piece.

Thanks so much. I really appreciate that review. My track lasts eleven minutes... Did you manage to write it in that time?

I also appreciate the time that anyone puts into listening to my compositions which are rarely less than six minutes long. So, again, many thanks... I am humbled.

I have tried listening to some of your songs while I am here but my android phone doesn't play your links. Might be because of the pop ups... As soon as I get a chance to power up my PC I will listen and comment.

Apologies for the crackling. I can't hear it for some reason. There is no crackling on my original WAV file and I have just steamed the track on SoundCloud and there doesn't appear to be any.

I wonder if anyone else can hear any crackling?

    Cheers

Yeah... Adaptiverb... It's a kind of reverb that has a bit of an identity crisis. It's more of an instrument really, which is what I use it for.

I look forward to hearing one of your future Ambient Drone toons

    Hi Andy.
I must admit I like a lot your music.
The only problem I am confronted with is that I listen to streaming on an I pad with a kind of studio monitor on the ears ( to get a kind of decent sounds) with a connexion which drives me right back to the middle age so it is not allways evident ( just to explain why I am not as present as I should...)
This piece is full of emotion as all the work you share ...
    Cheers.
    Olivier.

no reason in the world not to apply a vocal to this...

    ala hendrix's "drifting"

if you were to edit this down to about 5 minutes,
    add a vocal,
    strike gold.

    Hi there Olivier,

    Thank you very much

I know we all have various time and, indeed, technical restraints so no worries about that. You got round to this soon enough and I am more than happy that you took the time to listen and leave a comment both here and on SoundCloud.

I think I owe you an apology myself because I thought I had listened to all of your works, but it appears that I haven't. Did you have some set to private at all? I do that myself sometimes, if I'm not sure of a particular piece. Anyway, I am going to remedy that over the coming month.

    cheers

    Are you offering your services

To be honest, if I did anything with vocals I would probably start afresh. There's always room for improvement and this piece could certainly do with more than a bit of polish.

Thanks for listening Rob, and leaving comments both here and at SoundCloud, I appreciate really appreciate it

I really liked this. The guitar fits really well with the drone. For me it makes me think of a nice relaxing sunny summer scene.

Another very nice piece, Andy!   I'd have to re-listen to a few others to be sure, but this may be one of my favorites from you.  Something about it just resonates...

The clean guitar tone + FX work great over the drone, which with that automation has almost has a bit of a didgeridoo feel to it.     At spots the piece reminded me a little of an old Jon Anderson album called Olias of Sunhillow.
