Idea for how to save cash....

You wanna save cash ?? Get your self a big pickle jar or the equivilent, and every night take all the single dollar bills out of your wallet and put them in the jar....it's amazing how fast they add up......you won't even miss them and before long you'll have a whole jar full of cash...I've been doing this for the last month and I already have a big jar full of cash !!

Yep it's all mine....it's kind of fun and like magic....after a month or so you have this really cool jar full of cash that you can spend on anything you want, or just keep letting it get bigger and bigger. After awhile you start to think about spending and say to yourself, do I really want to trade my jar of cash for this or that ?? Many times you'll say no and you save even more. It really does get you into the habit of saving money.

I'm starting to do this with change as well...I've got a nice big jar with about two to three inches of change in it.

Yeah, I've been doing that for 3-4 years now. Start every 1st Jan, empty the jar out the week before Christmas. Usually buys a very nice festive dinner for the family.

So you've spent all the fees and taxes you've collected?

For this to work it implies that there is sometimes actually money in your pocket...  Right now, I can't afford the empty jar...

Now, as Bapu might have been implying, you can get others to contribute, then I'm up for this!

There's the best idea of all! My dad quit smoking and continued to put the money he would have spent for a pack of cigs each day in a jar. 10 years later, that jar helped to buy a house. Imagine doing that today with cigs being close to $7.00 a pack...whew...$49 a week times 52 weeks....$2548 per year, better health, good lungs! Not sure what beer goes for...but this dude could save a load of cash if he kicks those habits.

God Bless you man! That's a great story and you got a healthy body and a killer truck out of. I've been doing my best to cut down because I've had such a hard time quitting. It's the hardest thing I've ever tried to do believe it or not. I'd save even more money as the dumb things I smoke are $9.00 a pack now. I just hope I can kick it before something terrible happens. I have been cutting down extensively though. 8 per day, lightest cigs made 0.2 tar, 0.2 nic, small drags. It's a start...considering one REAL cig is equal to 8 of mine.

Forgot to mention in my original post...I sort of do what you do with your dollars. (I save all my change in a jar too and have like 5 big jars full now) I take the 2 newest, sandpaper-feeling $20 dollar bills out of my pay each week and save them. If there are no new ones, I ask the bank teller to hook me up with 2. I've been doing this since 1985 and have a nice little nest egg of brand new, stuck together money that is a bit hard to count. So I just never count it and let it continue to grow. :)

I also started this thing with my bank a few years ago that takes out whatever amount (up to $100 per month) you want and puts it in this little savings account. It actually gets 5.5% and each year when you hit the anniversary of when you opened the account, it doubles to 11.0% for that day on the full amount you have saved. Pretty cool for such a small amount. I do the $100 per month thing and it's been growing pretty good for the little bit of time I've been doing it. Nothing to brag about, but a little something extra that's sort of cool to watch grow. :)

Hmmmm. My ex was fond of that method of saving. Here's how that worked out......

She would lay claim to all my loose change and put it in the jar. I would go to by a newspaper, oh bugger, no change so had to break into a ten or twenty. Return from shop with paper and a handful of change, which I would very soon be relieved of "for the jar". Next time I'm out - packet of mints  - oh,  no change - break in to a ten, pocketful of change - the change is in the jar before I know it and so on. Before long I'm at the ATM getting more cash out even though I've hardly spent any of the last lot. So the jar's full but my bank account is empty. Don't really see the logic in that at all I'm afraid. I never saw any of the contents of the jar again either for that matter.

Easiest way to save money is to not spend it.

    great storys,
    dj,great thread man,good idea.

pablo,my wife does the same thing to man,but you know, for all the laundry, cooking, cleaning and caring for our family she does, she deserves every dollar.

funny thing is she usually takes that money and spends it on other people.

I think the current Mrs McCartney is even more expensive to keep - spends twice as much as the last one on shoes ;)
