I don't agree. The vst you point to is a cool device but it is more suited to one finger chord generation than to straight midi entry, which the cake virtual controller is intended to be. There are lots of options available that do something similar, but the root issue with a vst as opposed to a midi device is the routing that has to be set up each time you want to use it. Defeats the purpose. If you want to see more features in the virtual keyboard (I do), go and add your voice to the thread asking for improvements to it in the feature request forum. It's in there - I started it.

Does this virtual controller lose focus when you click on an effect/soft synth with the mouse ? Ie, you have to click on it again for it to recognize keystrokes ? That's what makes third party onscreen keyboards of limited use.

I tried useing the new keyboard to record a little lick and found that I couldn't start recording. IOW when I went to hit the record button to record the midi info on a track, the controller lost focus. When I make all keystrokes go to the controller, I can't start record. I have got to be missing something! : )

That's interesting. Why would "all keystrokes" include mouse clicks elsewhere ? I thought the function was to send the plugin keystrokes no matter what. (And that's the solution that isn't available to third-party virtual keyboards). Or - can't you, after hitting record, click on the keyboard again to get focus back and then proceed to play/record ? I was hoping that Cakewalk would have found a solution to this given that they have full control of the keyboard(s).

I just used the "Record" button in the "Transport" module. Apparently, I had to click the button twice and that started the transport rolling in record mode. The first few times I clicked the record button in the transport module (which I never use so I am unfamiliar with it) a menu came up that gave me options as to step record, comp and other options. Once I clicked the Record button twice, it now starts recording. This is with the mouse button. However, when I do start to record by clicking the record button in the transport module, I then have to click back on the keyboard window to put focus back on it, because if I don't, and I press and hold the keys "S,F, & H" the track manager comes up. Not sure why that happens. Maybe user error again? LOL [edit] Sorry Paul, I just reread your post. Then I describe the problem your asking about!! Not sure about this one, other than to click the keyboard window to put focus back on it.

If you really want to do something about the keyboard, add your thoughts to the feature request thread on the subject here: http://forum.cakewalk.com...ncements-m3198033.aspxSomething concrete that actually defines what you want to see is infinitely more useful to the developers than poking it for being "eye candy". I must admit, I must also be missing the thrill of this new Sonar Keyboard thing. Haven't found a use for it. I have a midi controller keyboard, don't have a touch screen, don't have a fancy phone or tablet, and most of my plugins that need an onscreen keyboard, have one built in. Am I missing something it does, or I'm just low tech ?

There are a lot of people who purchase their first foray into the DAW market but don't have any other hardware. They figure if they get into it, they'll buy a controller at some stage. Meanwhile, a virtual controller offers them a way to get MIDI into the computer without clicking notes on a piano roll. I should imagine it's also very useful when, for instance, you're traveling with Sonar on your laptop. You can sit and make music on a plane without a MIDI keyboard. I don't really see the problem. I do however, see a problem when people come screaming and shouting on a forum (by posting in all caps or gigantic font). I says "what I have to say is much more important than anything else that's being posted on this forum." It comes across as rude, aggressive and arrogant.

Might be good for guitar people - folks with synth plugins but no midi controllers, or people that like lima beans - I dunno. I have 2 midi controllers and they fit the bill for me, but lots of folks with different wants and needs, so if that helps some people that's cool. Bob Bone

Some people! These two are as different as beer is to milk. Stuff you drink, but for alternate reasons........... Although, one can mix the two. Throw in some nutmeg, cayenne pepper and honey......... The Onscreen controller uses the spacebar to Start/Stop the audio engine. Something like 'Alt/Spacebar' can be used to run the Sonar recorder engine, when a track has Record turned on.

I don't know, it's there, it doesn't cost anything, and you don't 'have' to use it. I have a midi controller keyboard, but for me it comes in real handy as someone else said somewhere, when I am trying out sounds in a synth that doesn't have it's own onscreen keyboard, it saves me from having one hand on the mouse and twisting to my right with the other hand to hit a key on my 'real' keyboard. Might only be a little thing, but I am thankful for it and use it all the time now in that instance. Can't see the problem, there are a few things we get given that I will most likely never use, this one I will/do, to me it is neither here nor there, the reason I purchase and upgrade Sonar is for what it does, which these free extra's are not required to accomplish. I would be happy if all we got was regular updates and bug fixes, without any shiny new bobbles, but I am thankful for them, especially if they are useful to me

It's great for auditioning synth sounds when I am using my laptop instead of my main DAW. I often shift projects over to the Laptop for mixing, when I've finished recording the main tracks of a song, then later I might add a few overdubbed tracks from a synth. I don't always have a controller handy when I'm working this way, and the onscreen keyboard is much easier than opening a separate program which is what I used to have to do. It's one of the great parts of the upgrade to Cambridge, it's quick, simple, and easy to use. I use it a lot.

Hate to go straight to the cliche, but this is apples and oranges. The keyboard included now with Sonar is simple and on par with those offered with most DAWs. Next you will be saying the arpreggiator is totally useless since it does not do what Cthulhu does. I doubt Cakewalk was thinking or implying this would replace a full 88 key controller for a concert pianist. I got the impression it was just a simple means to input notes when an actual keyboard was unavailable like the laptop on a plane scenario sharke mentioned.
