If I had to pick one...which mag would you suggest?
first a little background... I'm a guitarist/bassist/keyboardist/singer/songwriter who dabbles in midi for drums and occasional backing tracks for solo shows. I have a home project studio using Sonar 6 producer, reason, and a firebox as my interface. I want to subscribe to a magzine about sound recording/engineering/producing which will keep me up to date on the industry as well as provide insight into the areas i'm interested in. They're all relatively pricey so I want to just pick one. I'm leaning towards soundonsound's 2 year deal for $100 which includes web access (which is nice for all those great articles some of you vets have linked to here). I know there are tons more mags out there...does anybody want to talk me out of SOS?

Good question. I was almost about to ask the same. So far, I am leaning for 'Sound-On-Sound' also. I picked up the January 2007 edition at the bookstore. It has a good article on the Cakewalk VC-64 Vintage Channel. This article even talked about using the parallel compression feature offered in the VC-64 and how to obtain the 'Psychedelic Sixties' drum sound of the Beatles, Traffic, etc. Interesting read and stuff to experiment with. That is the stuff I want from a magazine. Actual how-to-use and hands-on type stuff. Also a good article on Les Paul. I also like many of the older Paul White articles on topics like Compressio/Limiting they have posted on the website. So no, I can't and don't necessarily want to talk you out of Sound-On-Sound.

TapeOp is better and you can get a subscription for free in the US. If you still want to spend money on something, SOS is better than most. Computer Music is excellent for beginner/budget/bedroom studios and gives away lots of free plugins/software and has great reviews, but focuses primarily on less expensive budget gear. Web forums are actually some of the best resources out there, FWIW. Cheers.

Mix, although I wouldn't subscribe because they put their entire issue on the web each month now. At least I think it's the entire issue. This Month's Issue of Mix I don't pick it up anymore though because they tend to focus on gear that's nutty expensive most of the time. I'd rather just read the more down to earth articles they have on-line.

I would also second TapeOp. For the price it is wonderful. Also, as Yep stated, a google search on a particular topic can bring in tons of information and articles - if anything it may be too much - but a very valuable resource.

Tape Op is great and it's free. You should subscribe for no other reason than it's free. But I wouldn't recommend it for anything related to MIDI. Tape Op, as the name implies, is more geared towards the analog side of the industry. SOS gets a nod and so does EQ Magazine. I had a two year subscription to EQ. They tend to focus more on MIDI and the various urban styles. You might find that more to your liking.

thanks for the suggestions guys...i signed up for the no-brainer tapeops for now. the reason i'm still contemplating SOS is because they have some great articles online that I can never finish reading because I don't have an account. smart marketing :)

I still take SOS after 8 years. Doubt it's the same in North America but in Oz, its price has just plummeted by 4 bucks to $10 ! If you're not keen on the paper subscription, grab their well-priced yearly eSub.

2nd on Electronic Musician. The product reviews and interviews always provide me with something to learn. I would also advise you to check out some of the podcasts on www.homerecordingnetwork.com, which cover everything from new gear to basic topics like compression. My personal favorite is Sine Language.

I pay for TapeOp (jealous Canadian). Love it. After the free for you no-brainer I'd get Sound on Sound. I've found it to have way more substance for the home/project recordist than the others. Although it is more expensive (at least it is here- as is most everything else- except cymbals for some strange reason).

Yeah- nice to see them in round 2...if it weren't for the Quebec born Luongo, we'd be nowhere. The guy's amazing. Need more than Luongo to get by Anaheim though. They're looking pretty good. But now we're getting off topic...sorry folks

I also concur on the Home Recording Network podcasts. If you have a broadband internet connection this is a no-brainer because they're free. My faves are: Project Studio Network, Home Recording Odyssey and MusicPro Show.
