If You Were Mine
Just a little YouTube experiment working out the kinks of recording sound to the DAW while videotaping to a separate camera. http://youtu.be/HMxeQF0Cgz8?hd=1 Next time I'll try to keep the light from reflecting on my eyeglasses. :-)

I'm always catching it when it comes to finding light glare off my glasses!! LOL! I found that it helps to have some kind of scatter shield to reflect the light off.... Beautiful rendition of that classic piece BTW....

I'm not familiar with that tune but I'm loving it. What a great haunting vocal melody, and very nicely executed.

Very nice performance and the HD video was stunning! Your mouth was moving with the words so apparently, your sync’ing experiment worked perfectly (I was almost expecting a low budget Kung Fu movie or 60’s Japanese monster flick mouth sync’ing effect). Tried to play your “Dual Eyes” video but it was private? Dave

Thanks guys, for watching and for posting nice comments. Grant, this song is probably most popular as a Billie Holiday number with a full ensemble backing... you may enjoy looking it up for a listen someday. Beagle, it was a chore to light and compose the shot without seeing it. I did a few tests shots to get started. Thanks for noticing. :-) best, mike

Good job Mike! That song doesn't sound quite as "electronic" as most of your work. The syncing looked spot on, maybe just a little better aim with the camera? (Unless pushing you off the screen to the left and top was for "artistic expression" - lol!)

Extremely cool Mike. The video is really good quality yet streamed nicely at this end. It was very nice to see and hear you. You'll gain in confidence as you do more, you have a lovely tone to your voice and near the end where you were relaxed enough for me to detect a hint of a smile I was really starting to chill with it. Good song choice too.

I thought it looked too good. Maybe that's not a bad thing. But the stark contrast between crystal clear performer and blurred background took me out of the environment. It felt like a bluescreen comp shot.

Thanks for the details Mike, a big fan of Billie's "Strange Fruit" Really great vocals you pulled it off on that. That tune ranks right up there with old blue eyes "The best is yet to come"

What I heard sounded good, Mike--particularly, for an impromptu demo. Unfortunately, my connection or You Tube was very slow and the video kept stopping to fill the buffer. I'll try again later.

Hi Everyone. Thanks again. I'll try to answer some tech questions. Camera: Canon 5DmkII still camera used in the HDSLR video camera mode shooting in 1920x1080p in a flavor of h.264 mp4. I had a lens at f2.8 and approximately 170mm. Sound: Sennheiser MKH60 shotgun style mic into a preamp then into a MOTU traveler going into my laptop. I had the mic about 12" above my head using a boom pole and stand I use on TV shoots and it was sort of pointed at my hands. DAW: Cheap SONAR competitor that seems to run on my laptop. Audio Sweetening: Built in EQ, Compressor, and Reverb that came with the DAW. If you have a video edit application it is fairly easy to sync the audio and video by looking at the wave forms. I "slate" the shots with a finger snap at the head and tail of the video take. I always start the DAW before the camera rolls and stop the DAW after the video stops. For this experiment I was using a free standing dedicated syncing application called DualEyes. It is made and sold especially for syncing audio to HDSLR footage. I choose the option to replace the camera mic sound (which is awful) with the DAW sound... so when DualEyes is done my video clips all have the better sound and are ready to transport anywhere. This little clip was so simple I never used a video editor to work on the clip. It was long so I used the Quicktime Pro trim feature to trim the beginning and end a bit before uploading to YouTube. I am interested in the idea that the video looks like someone just sat down and played a song... which is what I did... so the comments from you all are really great to hear. I'm trying to avoid using multiple cameras, lots of cool edits and making a "music video" because It seems like just watching someone play is almost more interesting or something like that. I'm hoping to maybe help some local musicians with a service that does this sort of stuff... it's like 1/20th the work of a "music video" and may actually even be more effective as a marketing tool. It may be a win win situation for lots of musicians. Anyways, thanks very much for checking it out and posting nice comments. I'm still on the road so I'm back to it... best regards, mike
