OK Here's my take on this:
Don't worry. Cakewalk will be fair when the upgrades to X2 (or whatever it will be called) comes out. They always have been fair.
But for your information (OP), Cakewalk did have promotions (that officially ended on Oct 30 2011, the month before the SONAR X1 Production Suite was announced via press release) for bundles of products that will bring a buyer of SONAR X1 Producer to the equivalent state of the SONAR X1 Production Suite. I bought into one of those promotions. The one I bought into was the Expanded Z3ta+2.1 Bundle for $119 (which included SONAR X1 Expanded, the PC4KS-Type Expander/Gate, and Z3ta+2.1.)
It was November 1, 2011 when I bought it, but even though it was past the dead-line date for the bundle promotions, Cakewalk still sold it to me at the special promotion price of $119. So, I paid a total of $218 for SONAR X1 Producer, SONAR X1 Expanded, the PC4KS-Type Expander/Gate, and Z3ta+2.1. As an existing customer of Cakewalk, I saved $281 because if I were a new customer, I would have been charged $499 for the SONAR X1 Production Suite. Existing customers do benefit from good savings. :)
So I say: Don't worry. Calewalk will be fair with the pricing when it's time for the upgrades. They have always been fair and down to earth, in my humble opinion.
So, if a user has bought, through separate purchases, all the products that add up to the SONAR X1 Production Suite, but have not bought the SONAR X1 Production Suite, I doubt it very much if Cakewalk will make that user pay more for the next upgrade (X2) than a user who has bought the SONAR X1 Production Suite. In other words, I believe those who bought the Production Suite and those who made separate purchases of products which adds up to the equivalent of the Production Suite will have the opportunity of getting the next flagship SONAR release at the same price.
Cheer-up and relax, man. Cakewalk are/is fair. :)
