RonJon's 2nd store was at the Cocoa Beach pier, which my family visited frequently back in '71. We were there for the restaurant at the far end of the pier. Huge platters of breaded fish and shrimp and the whole thing vibrating from the surf below.
Very cool.
To get there, you had to walk past the tiny surf shop, and I always stopped to check out the surfboards.
Never bought a board, but I did a lot of body surfing.
There was a sandbar about a half mile offshore. We would swim out to it, and watch for the dark waves. Dogpaddle through the little ones, and when the big one rolls in, swim like mad 'til you get up to speed, and ride it all the way to the beach.
Man that was fun.
You had to be careful, because the surf came in at such an angle in some places that the shear current was fairly strong (rip-tide,undertow), but if you stayed out of it you were ok.
In '71, the pier appeared much as it does in this picture.
