I did 163 mph once when I was in high school.  That was dumb enough, now I just watch it occasionally on TV.

Re:If you had a drag racer, how fast would you go? 2011/06/09 07:43:27 (permalink)
Drag racing... A friend of mine built one, from the rusted carcass of an old Chevy nova. Short story on it: I helped him get it home. It was serving as a chicken coop, and I ended up steering it, setting on a 5 gallon bucket, while he was in the tow car ... it was about a 2 mile ride but it seemed much longer with the smell of the poo.

He had been building a motor for his dragster for some time. So he turned it over to a friend with a body shop, and a few weeks later got it back. Didn't even look like the same car. This one was sweet. I think he traded engine work for body work.

Anyway, he dropped that engine in the car, changed some gearing in the tranny and rear end and proclaimed it ready to ride.

He competed in the street class (I think that's what you call it.... cars are street legal) so when he got it finished, he said to me...Lets take a ride. He had one of those braking systems where you can lock the front brakes and spin the rear tires to heat them up.... so he did that when we got to the side road to test it out....

What a ride that was. Slammed into my seat I guess like a carrier jet launch and a few seconds later we  were decelerating as the 1/4 was behind us.  Then he says, the rear end gears are not right, seems he didn't like the start due to gearing.

So he changed the gears and decided to take it to the drag strip and see what he could do out there. I learned that it takes thousands of dollars, some times tens of thousands to shave a mere half second off of your run time average. Since he was placing consistently in the bottom 50% of the pack, and having thousands invested already, his wife started to get on him about the "loosing money pit" in the back yard, so he eventually sold it to recoup his money.

That's my "go fast in a dragster" story.  That one ride I had was fun.

I've read that in 1969 a guy could go to the dealer and buy a
Chevelle SS 396 off the showroom floor and go to the strip....and win.

I bought an old Chevelle SS 396 a few years back and restored it.
Although there is no proof in the V.I.N. that the car is an original there
are things that let one know for a fact. It was but it didn't have the original
    motor.
What was cool is that when I gauged the cylinder walls of the '66 396 I
learned that it had never been bored.
Well the original cars did not have 396 motor's in them. They were all bored .030 over
so when I had the motor rebuilt it was a 402 as the original.

I never ran it at the strip but for a "stock" car zero to 60 was indeed fast.
I went to a car show with a friend that was entering his 70 Chevelle...I didn't
know he entered mine until they presented the first place trophy.
I was made an offer that I couldn't refuse so it sold very fast too LOL.

I was 14 in 1968 and in those years my home town had at least one of every
muscle car in town. I consider the muscle car years from 1964 - 1972.
We had a section of road marked off and back then I saw grown men break down
and cry....when they raced for "pinks" it was the real deal.

My fastest ride was in 1973 on a friends Kawasaki 900. You best be hangin' on.
If I remember correctly, back then the Kawasaki 500 three cylinder and the Cuda
    Hemi were hot.

When I raced the R6 it managed 120-125 by the 1/4 mile point and toppped out about 155 on a mile.

My drag bike however...  at that speed I was just about pressing the nitro button...
