If you want to do covers

Here is a very nice site that has 3000 midi/kar files to chose from. http://www.karaokebash.com/index.shtml

In case you are not familiar with .kar files, they are essentially midi files that have the lyrics embedded for play on a karaoke midi player. With MC they will not show up automatically. But with a midi kar player you could run thru a external synth or keybaord and have scrolling lyrics. There are as you will see on this site free kar players available. I open these .kar in a program that allows the lyrics to be seen and interprets the chords for me, then i process the midi feel out of it with better drums, and instruments, (virtual ones i might add) and resave and use these as a live set.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

Hey Rob - do you use these to do live shows? and if so, does your set start out with #2 popular download or #3? Maybe #10?

Just in case no one is aware... the latest versions of QuickTime player, will play .kar files with the lyrics display. QT, has a built-in midi synth! No better than the MS synth though.

Is it legal to import midi files into your cover songs? just curious. It would save alot of trouble to not have to create all the drum tracks from scratch.

A lot of folks use the MIDI files to create backing tracks for their solo live performances. Others use them and sing/play along to them and post the result on the web or send CDs or email them to friends and family.
I think, technically, it's illegal. But I'm no lawyer.

I buy the midi tracks to a lot of my songs from midi-hits.com, then go to work on them, deleting some tracks and adding my own guitar work, then using the synths and such to really dress them up, and of course my own vocal after that. I then run the finished soundtrack minus the vocal through PowerKaraoke CD-G Creator to synch the lyrics to to my new soundtrack and then I have essentially my own karaoke tune to use as a backing track when I play out...

This is what i do essentially. I import the .kar file and go thru the process of making it sound better, then us it as a backing track.

As for legality, who really knows, bars pay a royalty fee for having bands that play covers, So if you play at coffee houses or bars, then you are usually covered by that. If you are going to sell the stuff beware, you need permission. I do know that some midi sites are shutting down du to pressure not to sell other folks songs especially with lyrics. But i play for such a small crowd, usually friends that have parties and such, that who the heck is going to be at that party to complain.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!
