I'll probably never forget-

I was 14 and traveling to town with my folks in the big Ford station wagon. That Philco radio had a great sound to me...and man it just blew me away...The Beatles new song "Come Together" played and it was the most amazing
thing I ever heard.
They just seemed to me to have every instrument doing exactly what needed to be done and nothing more.
I've never been much on lyrics as I tend to hear a melody line instead but none the less...totally changed how I listened to music.
The thread about our loss....and just thought I'd mention this...not sure why.

That old Ford had a 390...and if you know..you know that was a mean motor....and a 6 x 9" speaker...what a rockin' wagon that was. :)

I gave up caring what others thought about me a long time ago.  When I want to grin, dammit, I'm going to grin!  My biggest problem is that some songs bring back such a flood of memories that I start daydreaming which isn't good if you're supposed to be driving!

LOL Craig....I sold my '89 Harley Ultra Classic because it had a great stereo and I'd get to listening and reminiscing - figured best to change my riding style. I was always amazed that a stereo on a bike could sound that good.

I don't think you need to be overly concerned with your involuntary insane grinning.  It's usually not a problem unless it occurs within the wrong circumstances.  Such occasions might include the following list:
    1. When paying your last respects at a funeral
    2. During the middle of an IRS audit
    3. When asking someone if they like gladiator movies
    4. While picking

I would have been 13 when Elvis died and probably just getting into the Beatles and Mountain … post Bay City Rollers (can you say S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y night … and people give Rebecca Black a hard time) yet I digress.  My friend Glenn’s father, who drove around in a beat up old brown Dodge with a push button transmission that he affectionately called the hush puppy, was a big Elvis fan and had tickets for a 1977 tour.  It was in that car that I learned of Elvis’ passing.

That man (Glenn’s father) had a tremendous amount of patience (either that or he was too drunk to care).  After the demise of the “Hush Puppy”, he acquired another junk heap as his primary mode of transportation just around the time that we were getting our drivers licenses’.  A group of us, never having even opened the hood of a car decided that that vehicle was going to be our cruising mobile and got to work doing the body-work first.  We all got together one spring afternoon and took the driver’s side door off … and after a few hours realized we had no idea what we were doing.  We then learned that it ain’t easy to put a door on a car.  That poor guy ended up driving that car into the ground with a driver’s side door that did not shut.

Naw...I don't sweat the small stuff. I've been noticing lately that I don't even
    sweat the big stuff.
I'm kinda like 'ol Wilson with that flaming marshmellow stuck on his forehead...ya got to roll with the punches. It's all for fun anyway. Isn't it?

I'm at the point where when someone is playing the radio and asks me if I want to change the station...

I just pause and reflect on the miracle that we even have a radio... and answer "no thanks this is fine".

What "ever" is fine by me.

    :-)

It's easier to get on the highway to fun that way.

    :-)

Dave I remember the Dodge push button transmissions as my mom drove a 1960 Dart.
It was BIG. Like a Batman car. LOL

Mike it was very cool around my house with the radio. Or music in general.
My dad thought The Beatles were genius. He's the one that sat me down to watch Ed Sullivan....I was a little air-head and would have missed them.
For an old man he was tops and very cool about it. He got a big kick out of rockers.

Lot of tunes like that one that bring back some special times where the music had a major impact on how I thought about it. But no doubt that was a big one and I'll never forget how he grinned when I yelled turn it up! No problemo.....he could rock too.

My parents were a little too old to appreciate the Beatles (they were far more into the Big Band stuff).  I still remember that I almost went to see the Beatles which would turn out to be their second-to-last concert in the U.S. on August 28th, 1966 (just looked up the exact date - never knew it before today) at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Some friends and/or relatives tried to talk my parents into going, but they didn't have a sitter so they didn't think they should go (although the others said to take me along).  So if they actually had gone, it probably would have been without me, but I still like to tell the story!

I still have fond memories of listening to the radio constantly and saving up for (or bugging my parents to buy me) whatever was the latest and greatest.  I also know that certain radio stations got annoyed with me always calling up to request songs that were longer than they wanted to play (Elton John's Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding comes to mind).  They preferred songs around 3 minutes back then...  ("Hi, can you play the Outlaw's Green Grass and High Tides please?" - "Kid, that song is almost 30 minutes long!!!!" - "Great!  Thanks! *click*"  )

I also remember my grandparents giving me this cutting-edge device called a "Transistor Radio" that was small enough for me to put under my pillow and listen to the Top-whatever late into the night after my parents thought I was asleep.  My favorite song to wait for was Bowie's Fame and mostly that was just to hear the wild vocal effect part that starts up a couple of octaves and transistions down several octaves ("Fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame...").

Now-a-days, I don't listen to the radio because I like to hear songs.  Evidentally, stations have forgotten what those are since 70% of the time is taken up with useless yapping or even more annoying commercials.  Then, when they DO play some songs, they think only 50 songs were ever created from the 60's through the 80's...  After you've listened for just a short while they start repeating!

That's why I use my iPods with huge numbers of songs for each genre so I can put it on shuffle and hear ALL the songs, not just a couple from each artist (heck, the radio stations don't even play all the hit songs for most artists!).  Ah, memories...

Ah...those little radios...I had one that I carried and mostly listened to it for the bus ride home. It was a good ride as I lived outside town in farmland. We had one AM station and that's all it would get. The big station that rocked was out of Oklahoma City- KOMA...I still remember....freaky It was really a small town outside...Elk City may be right. I could get it from New Mexico. Hot rods and AM radio...feelin' a little old...and I started it..... Well I just took a break from cutting the Sapele body wings for Wookiees Tele...got them sized and dropped one! Lucky me...landed on my big toe so it wasn't dented....the wood that is. I thought it broke my toe...but it was just me slippin'....I know now that it can take a body wing of Sapele square on.....for what that's worth. I see a sheep in your picture Craig....you know why the ranchers push them close to the cliff ?....... because they push back. ;)

    Bapu I can answer that.

There was a guy down from the coporate office who was there to ask me questions about
improvements that may be needed....a program called "outreach".
Well after we discussed how screwed-up the country and the company is we enjoyed talking about music. He was a couple of decades younger and was very interested in
    what I had "lived" through.....
Although I was young when Paul Butterfield was jammin' Woodstock I was old enough
and had been playing long enough to know that Michael Bloomfield was cookin'.
He was taking notes....and I'm still enjoying those great memories....while I blow off the sawdust.
No I don't think we improved on any of the company issues. If we did though I should wind up with a great computer and monitor LOL.
