I'm a Little Slow Sometimes: The Browser Is Really Cool!

Yeah, I used it for the normal stuff, but I started digging deeper into it and now I use it for all kinds of things. Some favorites:

  • The View > Folders option for media that creates a sort of mini-Windows Explorer. One of the coolest aspects is if you click on a content type (e.g., MIDI PTN files), it's highlighted in the folders tree. Now I know where all the Cakewalk content lives.
  • Being able to create my own custom content locations in the Media browser. I use quite a few loop libraries (especially my own!), and there they are.
  • I'm using the bi-directional aspect more - when I come up with a good loop in Track View, I drag it into a folder called "Potential Loops."
  • I know deleting a synth's tracks doesn't delete the synth (because if the synth is multi-timbral, you could get in trouble) but deleting a selected synth from the Synth Rack deletes all associated tracks with one click.
  • I'm getting more and more into track presets for things like hex guitar and drum projects with multiple outs - it's real convenient to just drag those in to a track and start recording.

Anyway, y'all probably know this stuff...I hadn't really paid that much attention the browser, but I'm glad I did.

Deleting a synth from the synth rack opens a dialog box with an option to also delete associated tracks.

The reason it is cool to have the option is that you can remove a synth and add another one, then connect the existing tracks to the replacement synth, OR if you want everything all gone then just let it delete associated tracks.

Choice is a good thing in this instance.

You can also replace a synth by right-clicking in the instrument track in the Track pane and selecting the synth you want to use instead.
    The routing is adapted automagically.

Really enjoy the Cakewalk MP3 encoder. Wich I bought half year ago. It normalizes my recording when bouncing to mp3 and thus saves me a ton of time. Thank you Cakewalk.

Allso once at the mixing stage you can insert TWO instances of the same plugin. This is usefull because one compressor set at 1:8 sounds worse than two compressors set to 1:4. So once you back off to 1:4 it may be at the end of the mix you think.... It should be a tad fatter. Well. Now you can easily. Very handy.

The one thing I wish they'd do in the browser is enable support for mouse navigation buttons - those extra mouse buttons usually on the side which take you back and forwards in browsers and when navigating folders in Explorer. I'm so used to using these buttons for navigating that I always press the back button to get out of a folder in Sonar's browser, only to realize it doesn't work there. I should think it would take them five minutes to add nav button support.

If you have a performance why bother making it sound less authentic with 64 bit precision engine, it's only going to go through youtube compression algorithmic rot or some kids mp3 player anyway (you pay for the ""clean"" mixes otherwise, although the musicians still haven't had a bath for weeks)....
