I'm a nurse now.
And, over two years after the actual injury, having exhausted the less invasive options, my lovely lady underwent surgery for hip labral tear yesterday. And so now I get to play nurse. :) The good news is that she's off for six months, so we get to spend more time together and to start working on our various musical projects. But before we get to that, there is a lot of treatment required - all around, we are looking at practically six hours a day of physiotherapy, exercises, having her leg strapped into a contraption which raises it at an angle, and similar fun activities. That and having to sleep on her back with her feet kept at an appropriate angle by those funny foam boots. And crutches, obviously. For the time being, it goes w/o saying that she's quite incapacitated, but the operation went absolutely fine and she should be recovering nicely. She's also very courageous - for me, the simple thought of being strapped to a machine for hours every day or not being able to move around the house as I want would be a nightmare. Even just those foam boots - I get claustrophobic thinking about it (foot claustrophobia, I wonder if there's anything about that on Web MD...)

Oh Lord Please no , not the coroner outfit , you wife is trying to recover Anyway , You get a pass for Halloween on a serious note , Rain , I wish you and your wife well and I hope you guys have a love filled speedy recovery . I hope I'm not inflicting my views upon you with what I'm about to say …if so please disregard … 5 years ago I had a very bad cycling accident and the surgery involved replacing most of my left arm from a few inches above the elbow to the shoulder with titanium .At the time it was an emergency surgery …. I will spare you all the details..The gist of what happened was it put the brakes on my life physically and gave me the opportunity to do a little soul searching …looking back on it , as a result of having that experience I was able to free myself in a way from certain things that had kept me feeling stuck in my life ….if I had to do it all over again I would . I know you like Bruce Lee since I saw a pic of yours on FB where you had one of his books on the shelf … Back in the day Bruce had broken his back and he was stuck for like 8 months on a full body traction contraption the whole time … During that time Bruce wrote The Tao of Jeet Kune Do by dictating it to his wife …. FWIW, this book has been one of my all time favorite reads all the best , Kenny

With her sense of humour, she'd actually dig the coroner outfit. ;) Not inflicting at all! Thanks for sharing, actually. We're rather positive about the whole thing. Obviously, the first weeks are a bit more demanding since I need to help her out for almost everything. But we also get to do things together - for exemple, I can do my cardio workout while she's on the stationary bike. We can do the physic while watching Star Trek and all. And then when she's free to move around, we can start working on music, which I'm really looking forward to. The toughest part was probably to get out of bed at 6 yesterday after a mere 2 hours of sleep and then spend 6 hours waiting. So, no big deal. really. :) You remember right about Bruce Lee. He's always been one of my biggest inspiration, and an inspiration in practically every domain - even my attitude towards music has been shaped in part by his teachings. And I do keep his books at hand, always. (The 2 I own are some of the very few books I brought w/ me when we moved to the US.) Actually, they sit on the top shelf with the music reference books and biographies. And an occasional cat.

That's the reason she's off for six months. Working with the harness is out of the question - that's how she injured herself, actually. I'm confident that things will be fine. We had a physiotherapist dispatched by Cirque this pm, and he was very pleased with the way things looked. Cirque usually hire the best of the best and according to our physio, the guy who operated on her is the second best in his speciality, having studied under THE highest rated specialist. I was actually surprised to see how tiny the scars were...

Hope she heals up quickly and thoroughly. She's lucky to have a good guy like you to take care of her. Speaking as someone who's been on both sides of the "nurse" equation with people close to me, know (as I'm sure you already do) that there can be a lot of frustration for the patient and the caregiver that manifests itself in some unfortunate outbursts and resentment... especially for people who are so close to each other but used to also being independent as you guys seem to be. Patience and understanding is definitely in order and make sure to take care of yourself (mentally and physically) as well. I'm sure you guys will do fine and any momentary frustration will be minor and quickly forgiven/forgotten. Best to you both.

LOL Here's a little summary I'd just written when I saw the news an hour ago or so... " In this day and age where special effects are visuals mistaken for a scenario, action for substance, and confusion for depth, you simply cannot attract the large audiences those networks and producers want and remain true to Star Trek. The horrendous Abrams movies were a brilliant demonstration of that, if very little else. Expect to see crew members abandon the traditional Shakespeare quotes and Mahler music for references to the Twilight series and Beyonce, and "breathtaking, riveting, stunning" scenes to replace those lengthy discussions about ethical and philosophical issues. The dumbing down of Star Trek is underway..."

On the other hand - we've finished Voyager last week or so and begun DS9. We're approximately halfway through the 2nd season. That leaves 5 DS9 seasons, 7 seasons of Next Generation, 3 seasons of TOS, and 4 seasons of Enterprise (which I have yet to see myself). Plus 10 movies... I don't think we'd go as far as watching the animated series. We should be all set for a while. :P

All the best for a speedy recovery. Being half way through the recovery from a broken leg I can understand the frustration of restricted movement by external factors. For me it's a toe to groin plaster. I escaped surgery so considering what might have been, I've been very lucky to have a routine recovery.

:) Almost a week now and we've established a kind of routine, though I really need to find a way to re-integrate my workouts into that schedule. But my wife's condition hasn't really been the issue - it's the menagerie that's been waking me up early and keeping me busy. Puking puppy, sick cat, vet appointment... Feeding all those guys, giving each one the time and specific care/meds they need, and w/ a young puppy that is very demanding and still not perfectly house trained can be very demanding. Plus, as is often the case towards the end of the year, one of our cats fell ill - we were really expecting the worst but he's getting better. That is, $700 later, and not yet having the results of all the tests... And yet more meds...
