I'm freaked out: Sun Ra has grabbed my ya.
Trimph1 mentioned a Sun Ra documentary.
I thought, hey I remember Sun Ra tearing it up in the '70s... I'm gonna watch.
So I did.
The next thing you know I'm on Grooveshark listening to 5 of his albums and I'm gobsmacked.
I had no idea that he started as a traditional jazz band leader and the stuff from 1956-1959 seems very traditional yet 3 or 4 (or way more) years ahead of what my idea of music history suggests that I should expect. It's like Mingus before Mingus.
I can't get the soft texture, the fancy harmonics, and the hip rhythms of 1956's Super-Sonic Jazz out of my head.
It's groovy.
Juts sayin.
Thanks Trimph1
