I'm looking at a particularly nice piece of Korina...

...and I'm thinking: "what could I do with that?"

It's 22-1/2" x 13-1/8" x 2".

Any suggestions?

Please discuss.

Common names for wood seem to change as the harvest through distribution networks change.

Korina is a buzz word for guitar geeks.... like me. :-)

Anyways I found this one board that just looks so pretty I'm thinking of asking it out on a date.

    Make a hole, exactly 22-9/16" x 13-3/16" x 2". It'll drop right in, you watch.

Geeesh. I wish I could put pieces of wood together like that....

I'm a cheeseboard player. I work for a company that is full of musicians and I am outnumbered about 99:1 by guitarists. I know how attached you get to your wood :)

    That's beautiful craigB.

To my mind, selection of beautiful grain is where my interests lie. The selection process and the eye for detail makes such a difference.

I have the 2 cabinets that I made last year and each plank was hand selected... it took many trips to find enough boards to make the project happen. Now, casual visitors stop when they enter the room and marvel at the distinct harmony the wood selection resulted in. They don't really know what it is that they sense until they think it through for a while.

    James, that was funny!!!

    best regards,
    mike

I don't know, I think I recall that Flying Vs are really big.

I was thinking 13-1/8" is just enough for a Tele p-90 rig.

    Yes? No? Maybe?

V's are big. Exposed neck-thru design helps. Not a guitar design I really
care for....I like to sit now. Age did that I'm thinking.

A Tele style with P-90's sounds like a great one.
Godin now has a Tele style with SD P-90's. The Core P-90.
Personally I'd like to go way back and get all the hardware from Callaham-vintage
with all the straight slot screws etc. and load it with SD pups and
reversed Tele style controls ( switch to back - 4 way) or no switch
    and blender.
I'd do the P-90s on the old Melody maker style or the double cutaway...for a fun
guitar. I used to have a '59 Melody maker that I used for slide....fun little guitar.

So you thinking exotic top or no?

Well, I've been sort of fascinated with these P90 Korina guitars everyone seems to be making. They don't have anything exotic and they cost a boat load. I think maybe I'll make my own bolt on version.

I am still dreaming of a fancy exotic top with a neck thru from a certain custom builder I know.

    best,
    mike

Not exactly...  This has been in the works for a couple of years now.  It's mostly done, but put on hold while the luthier moved to a much bigger location and while I deal with my situation.  Although it could be made to look sort-of the same, there will a LOT of differences.  This one will be FAR lighter (using Korina, a.k.a., Black Limba, instead of Wenge plus the back won't be capped so there'll be a tummy tuck as well).  This one will have a less imposing trem too (probably a Wilkinson), silver hardware and will be red.  It will still have pretty much all the tone options that the blue one had though, just with more modern sounding pickups.

I picked up an old upright grand a couple of years ago for very cheap. It's beyond worthwhile for me to restore it - but I think I noticed that the sides of it are nearly 2" solid ( nicely aged ) +/- a hundred years of, looks like, birds eye maple. I haven't had it open a year or two. But hears a thought : you can usually pick-up older pianos for nearly free. I wonder how many of these have good quality tone wood planks.
