I'm losing it!!

My hearing that is.

I've had more than my share of physical and health issues over the years but this is killing me. In March I started to notice high end roll-off in one ear. It has been getting worse since. I just had a hearing test that indicates severe hearing loss in that ear with no visible cause. Aside from the loss there's also the addition of tinnitus and the almost constant sound of my own heartbeat. It's making me crazy.

I can't work on amps and my new speaker cab design is at a standstill. The best way to describe it would be a comparison to seeing with one eye. There's no depth and a lack of detail. I simply can't be immersed in sound anymore. Right now it's the only thing keeping me from jumping on the lifetime updates. Why bother when my ability to differentiate frequencies is shot. Music sounds like crap. 25 years working in steel mills hasn't helped my good ear any. I'm thankful that I always used hearing protection. It was an environment of almost constant noise levels from 90-130 db.

I'm not rich and this is Canada. That means it will be a long and tedious process to get any specialists involved in diagnosis or treatment.

Protect your ears at all costs, when they're gone... well, the party just isn't the same.

Regards, John

Bummer, John.  Canadians have to wait for healthcare?

I've been having tinnitus spells come and go.  I need to see a pro.  The GP I mentioned it to said, "Yeah, tinnitus is often a sign of the onset of hearing loss."

    That was helpful.

I just had a complete workup by an audiologist after a winter of hearing issues coming and going caused mostly by infections and neck issues.

He showed me a graph which indicated my right and left hearing loss similar for both ears and dropping off at about 6K. That had me concerned.

Then he said, if you were a 21 year old classically trained violinist you should be jumping up and down and screaming for an ambulance. However at 63, you should be jumping up and down in glee as you have very good hearing for your age :)

My tinnitus is also creeping up, not as an indicator of hearing loss, but more likely do to other factors of mine e.g. neck issues, age, radiation for cancer, heredity, heavy chainsaw use, etc. and there is a long list of other tinnitus causing issues he mentioned which I don't have e.g. smoking, etc.

"I'm just workin' on a good life, the way it is."

    robbyk,

Almost my story to a tee/tea/T.

I have 70% level loss in my left ear and 40% level loss in my right. I almost exclusively mix on headphones now. I too cannot hear over 6KHz unless I used extremely hyped earbuds which I do to check a mix for harshness.

I've adapted given that most of my left ear problems occured at around age 40.

John, here's hoping that you can learn to adapt.

Hi. You might already know of this and I am not sure If this helps but the Adel hearing technology is pretty good. I read that even Brian Johnson tried it and is pleased. But it is not yet totally ready If I understood correctly so there are still limitations.

That's a bummer, John, and I know what you're talking about.
I've had hearing loss from a very young age, had surgery at 9 which helped a little, but it's getting worse. The tinnitus, well, that's been non-stop in both ears for a couple of years.
Thank goodness I don't have to make a living with them, but the prospect of losing out on my favorite hobby... that's just too hard to contemplate.
Hopefully, you can get help before it's too far gone.
